In the laboratory, I processed and ensured the correct submission of pig samples from various clients to specialized reference laboratories for precise disease testing. I reported the results to the assigned veterinarian to ensure the clients were well served. As a researcher, I developed protocols and conducted data analysis to interpret data, deriving meaningful conclusions and insights from experimental studies involving pigs. I assisted veterinarians with projects related to health issues, such as prolapses and PRRS sequence analysis. I supported Canadian pig farmers in implementing the Canadian Pork Excellence Program (CPE) to ensure on-farm food safety and animal care.

I work in the Institute for Molecular Virology. I focus on understanding retroviruses mechanisms of infection and replication. I have advance training in plasmids design and production, cell transfection, VLPs production, cell cultures, flow cytometry, FPLC, PCR, gel electroforesis, sequencing, E. coli transformation. protein production and purification, lab management and data analysis.

I evaluated the trends and seasonality of turkey reovirus in the last ten years. I also developed an ELISA test to detect turkey reovirus antibodies. I conducted turkey reovirus Serum Neutralization tests and virus isolation with different cell lines and eggs.

I developed a duplex Real-Time (RT-PCR) for detection of Porcine Teschovirus (PTV) and Porcine Sapelovirus (PSV) in swine. I validated this test using Whole Generation Sequencing, HiSeq Illumina system. In addition, I conducted a prevalence study of these viruses in the USA.

I worked on airborne experimental transmission of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome virus (PRRSV). I tested air filters that are used in swine breeding farms in the USA. I collected air samples using the Andersen cascade air collector. I detected PRRSV by RT- PCR in those air samples.

I assisted pork producers who use feed grade antibiotics for swine. I focused on customers’ needs to deal with respiratory and enteric diseases at different production stages including grow-finishing and breeding. I led a monitoring and surveillance program for swine respiratory and enteric diseases. This program consisted of lesions monitoring at slaughterhouses for the biggest producers in Ecuador. This information helped them make better vaccination and medication decisions.
