I am a sociologist studying the mechanisms generating health and network inequalities in modern societies. My research agenda focuses on how social connections and stratification linked to statuses such as gender, race-ethnicity, education, etc., generate unequal patterns of mental health experiences, health behaviours, and health, over the life course. I am a methodological pluralist: what matters is not what method is used but what evidence each method can bear for our research questions. My dissertation research uses quantitative methods and large longitudinal survey data to show the processes connecting mental health, health behaviours, and social networks, as people age. Alongside my dissertation and additional research on health, I am currently collaborating on projects which draw out and test research questions that speak to some enduring problems in sociology about social connections, community dynamics, and stratification; as well as advance understanding using big data and computational methods. My scholarly agenda is dedicated to producing research that (1) can help people make evidence-based decisions about their health and their community members’ health; (2) holds practical implications for policy design and targeted interventions; and (3) clearly presents results in ways which are publicly accessible, can inform future research design, and facilitate meta-analyses. I strongly value open science principles and transparent research practices. By doing so, I aim to both make people aware of the possible effects of their social life to influence their health, behaviour, and well-being (and vice versa); and, to allow readers to reach their own decisions as to how I came to these results and their consequences.
