About Solomon Yimer

Solomon Abebe Yimer is an experienced public health professional and epidemiologist with over 25 years of experience working in research institutions in Norway and the public health sector in Ethiopia.Currently, Solomon is a senior scientist at the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Oslo, Norway (https://cepi.net). Before joining CEPI in 2017, Solomon was a researcher at the Oslo University Hospital, Norway where he studied the molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex in the Horn of Africa. He organized and led the study in Ethiopia, Sudan, and South Sudan. He conducted genomic and proteomic studies addressing the clinical relevance and transmission of a novel Mtb lineage, lineage 7.After completing his PhD in 2010, Solomon held a postdoctoral position at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (NIPH) in Oslo where he participated in an international project that developed a rapid serological TB test suitable for use at the primary healthcare level in low- and middle-income countries. He is currently affiliated with the EDCTP2-funded SeroSelectTB project, coordinated by NIPH, in which the rapid TB test is being evaluated in South Africa, Tanzania and Ethiopia (www.seroselecttb.org).Solomon served as a public health leader at the various levels of the health system in Ethiopia for 15 years. Among others, he was head of Health Programs Department, and head of Health Services and Capacity Building Department at the Amhara Regional State Health Bureau, the second largest Region in Ethiopia with a population of more than twenty-five million. Solomon has proven experience in teaching and mentoring. He has been a lecturer for MPhil and international summer school courses at the University of Oslo (UiO) since 2008. He has supervised several PhD and MPhil students at the UiO and other universities in Ethiopia. Solomon authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications in the fields of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.Solomon is skilled in infectious disease research, global health, project and program management, community engagement, mentoring, and quantitative and qualitative research designs. He has extensive experience in effective planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating public health programs and health services activities. He has strong and enthusiastic coordination, people management, communication, and team-building skills. Solomon is especially interested in diagnostics and vaccines for high priority pathogens, infectious diseases epidemiology and global health.
