Somerville Munt is a junior at William & Mary from Fluvanna County, Virginia. She is currently pursuing a major in Government and a minor in Psychology, and also enjoys learning about international relations, global religions, and the French language. Somerville is interested in a grassroots approach to sustainability and community development, inspired by her rural upbringing, where sharing one’s crafts, land, and harvest is commonplace. She hopes to adapt this lifestyle to modern society through the development of improved public transportation, expanded attention to community gardens and other sustainability initiatives, and increasing local community involvement. In pursuit of this goal, she has worked for many nonprofit organizations, including her local SPCA and the nonpartisan Campus Votes Project. She has also been influenced by her study both about and within foreign nations; she spent three months studying abroad in Costa Rica, and intends to travel to Europe as well, to continue her study of international methods of building communities. Outside of academic endeavors, Somerville enjoys staying informed on current events, performing in various campus music groups (including the W&M Wind Ensemble and Sitar Ensemble), playing video games, creative writing, drawing, gardening, and checking out new Japanese restaurants.
