Engenium was the classic startup story of a product destined to succeed despite a thousand lessons learned. Conceived as my graduate NLP class project and eventually acquired by Kroll in 2006, we built an enterprise search company by bringing one of the first "conceptual" search engines to market. The core technology was an embeddable search engine applying statistical natural language processing with automated and unsupervised learning. By building reduced vector-space models of unstructured text in a scalable way, we were able to learn word-meaning from repositories of customer documents and provide one of the first context (not keyword) based search engines that helped solve business problems. Starting in the Human Capital Management space and moving across Knowledge Management, Defense, and eventually Legal, we stayed alive and won deals away from companies like Autonomy (now HP), Endeca (now Oracle) and Fast Search (now Microsoft) purely on sweat, passion, and coffee.
