How do biases influence our workplaces? Do they make us bad people? Most important, “Can we do anything about them?” If so, I get it. The issue of unconscious bias is confusing. In fact, I’ve spent the bulk of my career answering those questions for myself and for dozens of clients in a wide-variety of industries. Bias, you see, rests at the core of our diversity challenges. It’s the key element that creates misunderstandings, prevents us from hiring the right people, fuels the “isms” that plague our nation, and stifles the creativity that is key to business success.Dismal picture, isn’t it?Well, not really. There are, in fact, practical tools we can employ to overcome bias and, therefore, see others more accurately and more fairly. And, I am gratified to say, it is those tools that I take such pleasure in offering to my clients.MY PHILOSOPHY: In my experience, effective bias-reduction training is not about blame; it’s about instilling a sense of empathy and responsibility while supplying practical tools for moving forward.
