I am interested in applying concepts of evolutionary medicine and extending them to new extremes in the medical field. My interest in a medical career is fueled by a passion for innovation and novel approaches to modern medicine. This passion started as I learned about evolutionary medicine in an upper division course that focused on reshaping the practice of modern medicine and exploring how commonalities between humans and animals can be used to diagnose illnesses.I have become fascinated with the idea of applying a species-spanning approach, built from the animal behavior research of Nobel Prize winner Niko Tinbergen, in developing interdisciplinary techniques to interrogate issues in health. I had already formed an appreciation for the study of animal behavior, in part simply, because of my love of being outdoors. My evolutionary medicine course taught me that concepts from the field of animal behavior can be used to understand underlying causes of illness in humans, thus promoting preventative health.
