About Sonia Burns
I am currently enrolled at Whitman College pursuing a degree in Biology-Environmental Studies. I am exploring a variety of ecology research systems and questions to see which is the best fit for me because eventually, I plan to pursue a graduate degree in conservation biology and lead my own research lab with a fieldwork component.Working in an aquatic propagation lab for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation sparked my interest in fieldwork. I loved connecting my observations in the rivers of Eastern Oregon and Washington to challenges facing the mussels and lamprey that the lab is studying. From there, I pursued more opportunities to conduct more field work and learn about different perspectives on environmental issues. I completed Semester in the West, an interdisciplinary field-studies program focused on experiential learning. With three staff members and twenty other college students, I travelled through ten American states and to one city in Mexico. I met with guest speakers from a range of disciplines, from ranching to writing to biology. In addition to discussing issues on public land and learning about different perspectives on conservation, we completed several days of fieldwork for biologists. These included counting aspen and observing the impacts of cattle grazing on different sites.I built on this experience by completing internships and field studies programs. From the tides pools in the sandy beaches of Santa Cruz to the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica, I have conducted surveys and experiments with a wide range of organisms. These projects included a ground squirrel behavioral study, a lizard physiology study, and an acoustic bat monitoring project.I have supplemented these practical field work skills with analytical skills to make sense of the data that I want to collect. I am proficient in making graphs using R, managing Excel sheets, and learned how to use the program MARK to model pocket gopher occupancy for my most recent internship. I will also be taking a course on GIS this fall.

I also helped tag hawk fledglings so that raptor biologists can monitor their activity as they grow and migrate. I learned to identify common plants in Walla Walla county
Doris Duke Conservation Scholar
I conducted several ecology-focused research projects, including a survey of Western fence lizards and study on ground squirrel behavior. I also practiced scientific writing and presentation skills. Additionally, I talked to professionals in different areas of conservation, from land trusts to policy advocates to professors.
Summer Intern
In the aquatic propagation lab, I help raise lamprey and mussels. Experiments in this lab focus on learning about the optimal environment to raise these creatures. My work this summer focuses mainly on taking care of specimens in the lab, including feeding them and writing observations in a laboratory journal. I will also work on laboratory maintenance so that the lab can function effectively and I can learn what working in an aquatic lab feels like. I will also participate in fieldwork to collect additional specimens for the lab.
Teaching Assistant
I helped prepare materials and work with individual students so that the art teacher could focus on instructing the entire group.
