Sonia has provided advice on Aboriginal legal matters and related environmental assessments, negotiations, regulatory and constitutional issues. Sonia has expertise in consultation and accommodation processes for major projects in energy, mining and forestry industries. She has experience negotiating self-government arrangements and Treaty land entitlement agreements. Sonia has advised on the Indian Act, negotiated two arrangements under the First Nations Commercial and Industrial Development Act, and negotiated regulatory arrangements under the First Nations Land Management Act. Sonia served in a senior capacity with the Government of Saskatchewan for a decade and has a deep understanding of provincial and federal processes. This experience in the public sector is instrumental in providing Indigenous clients with sound strategic and legal advice when dealing with the Crown. Sonia speaks frequently at conferences in Canada dealing with Aboriginal legal issues such as consultation and accommodation, self-government, and removing legal barriers for project development on reserve.

Co-teaching PSCI 334 entitled Canadian Politics and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for the Department of Politics and International Studies. This course focused on current topics in three areas of Canadian constitutional law – federalism, the Charter of Rights of Freedoms, and Aboriginal and Treaty rights. It included themes and topics including the history and development of rights under the Charter, ongoing struggles over federal and provincial powers; and Aboriginal and Treaty rights in Canada’s constitution.

Sonia was a solicitor in the Constitutional Law Branch and advises ministries, agencies and Crown Corporations across the Government of Saskatchewan on Aboriginal legal issues such as the Crown’s duty to consult and accommodate, Treaty Land Entitlement, UNDRIP, the Indian Act, Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, FNCIDA, and the application of provincial laws on reserves. She also provides legal support to the province for negotiations with Aboriginal communities and the Federal government.

Selected as one of thirteen young lawyers across Canada to participate in an internship to gain experience in international human rights law. Worked as a legal intern in the Gender Research and Advocacy Program at a Non-Governmental Organization committed to the protection of human rights through litigation, lobbying, public education and advocacy. Conducted legal research for a report entitled, “Rape in Namibia: An Assessment of the Operation of the Combating of Rape Act, 8 of 2000”. Conducted field research for a report on the implementation of the Combating of Domestic Violence Act, 4 of 2003 by reviewing hundreds of Protection Orders throughout Namibia.
