Sonia Hernandez joined The Southwest School of Art in July 2015 as a Chief Financial Officer. As a senior member of the leadership team, reporting to the President, her primary responsibility was execution of financial strategy, budget preparation, risk management planning, operating budget monitoring and Human Resources administration. As a CFO, Sonia was responsible for the organization’s overall financial operations, investment reporting, accounting aspects of food services and facility rentals , as well as strategic planning. Sonia advised the President and staff on all financial aspects involving exhibits, school, food and beverage and bursar activities. Sonia provided counsel to the President and senior directors on matters of governance, compliance, human resources, property insurance, lease, government matters and organizational policies. Sonia acted in a consultant capacity to facilitate daily financial operations and the smooth transition of the incoming controller into the position.Prior to joining the independent non-profit arts institution, Sonia had extensive experience in finance, accounting, human resources, grants and operations in non-profit organizations and hospitality. Sonia was a senior accountant at an upstream oil and gas company from 2013 to 2015, were she was responsible for natural gas taxes, payroll activities, management of accounts payable, accounts receivable, joint interest billing and contracts. Sonia was an accountant at the San Antonio Museum of Art from 2009 to 2013, where she provided leadership in the accounting and finance areas. She was responsible for financial reporting, revenue recognition, payroll and human resources administration, grant development and advised retail operations, development, membership, curatorial and exhibits departments in financial issues. Prior to her career in arts non-profit, Sonia was an auditor in historic, upscale and privately owned hotels. Sonia Hernandez is a cum laude graduate of University of the Incarnate Word a private university in San Antonio, Texas and received her Master in Science in Finance from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
