I am a Mechanical Engineer, specialised in orthopaedic and spinal research.As a ReSurger, I aid orthopaedic surgeons in publishing their research, by designing clinical studies, reviewing the relevant literature, performing data analysis and writing publications for top peer-reviewed journals.My doctorate aimed to characterise the mechanical properties of the spine, and in particular the intervertebral disc. I have focused on investigating different biomechanical testing protocols and parameters that affect the measured dynamic behaviour of the lumbar spine in six degrees of freedom. The output of my research consists of recommendations for testing of monosegmental spinal specimens, which can be used to further improve our understanding of the healthy spine, as well as the degenerated intervertebral disc.

As part of my role I developed a testing protocol, including fatigue testing and testing to failure.This led to a collaboration with one of the companies, which resulted in an improvement of their device’s performance. -

Students worked in groups of five during a week in summer to design (CAD), create (3D printing) and test (water tunnel) a dorsal fin replacement for a dolphin.
