About Sonia Shiel

Sonia Shiel’s painted works are often free-standing or traversable; and present an invitation to collude. Her narratives engage with inanimate objects that dream of being sentient. Her processes are collaborative in approach, exploring space; representation; and conclusion. Her exhibitions synthesise object, image and sound, to create landscapes that, whilst being physically identifiable as a domain or province of something otherworldly, articualte a theoretical jurisdiction with the audience that might be otherwise described - as a folie à deux, or the madness of two.As an exhibiting artist, and current full-time member of Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, in Dublin, I regularly convene collaborative teams to develop and execute my projects - these include writers, actors, technical experts, videographers, costume designers, communities and institutions. I engage in archival and generative research, both individually and institutionally; have received a number of coveted awards; and have been successful in navigating Irish and international funding streams. I am an occasional teacher in a variety of settings from universities to prisons, and in addition to achieving a BA in Fine Art from NCAD, and an MA in Visual Art Practice from IADT, I have audited an MA in Playwriting from UCD, while being the resident artist in the School of Drama, and I am a fellow of Fordham University's Art and Law Program.
