The current cascaded down Main Street in Penticton, B.C. Dozens of us could now sense the Finish Line as our tired legs and minds were comforted by our hearts. We drenched our souls in the 2.4 mile swim, cranked out a 112-mile declaration of strength on the bike and the first 26 miles of the marathon were fought and won. The last 0.2 miles were special: this was our victory lap, we claimed our spot in the General Classification, but our souls beamed brightly for everyone in our families and spectators to witness. Each person in the crowd and every cheer brandished became a pixel of inspiration that lights a smile across my face. Completing the 140.6 miles at Ironman Canada 1997 set the tone for the rest of my academic career and pointed me in professional career.I left home to college with the intention of becoming a Spanish teacher because of three of my teachers in High School. One was my math teacher and running coach in cross-country and track. The other was my history teacher and wrestling coach. They believed in me and making progress. My Spanish teacher got me into an exchange program to Mexico that would lead me to return a few years later to improve my Spanish and absorb what life is like for others in a totally different culture. These three had a big influence in the rest of my burgeoning self-realization.I learned that my health was important to me, flying down the road on foot, or on my bike was exhilarating. Being in top condition and able to wrestle with my own strengths and weaknesses was enlightening. Knowing Spanish as I did made me understand that there was a whole other world of knowledge I could delve into and learn. Health and wellness was always intrinsic, but it was now a message I could share. Much of my studies in Spanish, Exercise Science and my Ironman training has opened a way for a unique creativity to be added into the work that I do: helping people find their own spark in their own hearts.
