To earn my master’s degree in Neuroscience, I was required to join a research group from the Institut de Neurociències (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). My choice was to join Animal and Human Models in Mental Disorders, coordinated by Dr. Alberto Fernández Teruel. This group focuses on translational research of psychological, neurobiological and neurogenetic mechanisms underlying mental disorders associated with anxiety, attentional disruption and impulsivity. As an Intern, my tasks were as follows: review of papers and latest breakthroughs achieved by the research group, assistance in maintaining animal models and facilities, collaboration in experiments to measure pre-pulse inhibition, startle response, locomotive activity, arousal and social interaction in both RHA and RLA rat strains; dissection and extraction of brain tissues, coding and analysis of the results using SPSS Statistics, scientific writing and paper publishing. To earn my bachelor’s degree in Psychology with tracks in Clinical Psychology, I worked as an Intern in a residence for the elderly, specialized in nursing patients with neurodegenerative diseases, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, acquired brain injuries as the outcome of traumas, ischemias, strokes, etc. Research in Neuropsychology shows that it is possible to enhance cognitive functioning through psychotherapy to slow down cognitive loss and reduce the impact of these diseases on the patients’ capacity to carry out daily routines. Consequently, the tasks I was assigned were: diagnosis to identify pathologies underlying clinical profiles, weekly neuropsychological assessments to evaluate improvements and declines, neuropsychological reports, cognitive stimulation therapy and neuropsychological rehabilitation.
