As a Higher Ed professional I have learned much about the living actions that give meaning to the words “Student Success.” As a graduate student I have studied student success theory, worked first-hand with undergraduates, and shared the experiences of colleagues on the challenges and rewards of supporting the dreams of college aspirants. Student Success is the realization of personal achievement in academics and college engagement; it is the affirmative merging of students’ academic focus and achievement with their broader institutional experience. By this I mean, it is good grades and good times, the learning of balance in tandem with a focus on completion in a supportive environment. Our responsibility, as higher education professionals, is to help students chart a course towards their vision by developing tangible, achievable goals; spurring intrinsic motivation to stay the course. Student success is more than the successful completion of courses. Student success is a continuum, a process of personal evolution that involves identifying, establishing, and redefining goals. Through interdepartmental collaboration, we can advance a culture of progression, retention, and degree completion. Because the needs of students vary, the role of higher education professional may change from one day to the next. However, individuals in these positions have the honor to walk with students as they embark on their individual journey of success and pursuit of happiness.
