Sonya Underwood has been challenging the stereotypes throughout her life. As a native black Cherokee Indian from Atlanta, Georgia, she has overcome her fair share of obstacles, including being the only female minority student who graduated Cum Laude as an Aviation Maintenance Avionics Engineer.Currently, she works as a Military Parts and Commercial Jet Engine Inspector at the 3rd largest Aviation Manufacturer in the world, Pratt and Whitney, thriving as a woman in a non-traditional male-dominated profession. She is the recipient of the elite 2021 CAE Scholarship. The scholarship is presented for Challenger 300/350 10 days initial maintenance training course for excellence.Sonya Underwood comes from a legacy of path-breakers. Her grandfather was an SSGT soldier in the U.S Army during World War II, and her father served as an SGT U.S soldier of The Air Force during the Vietnam War. Being a single mom to three children, one of whom has autism, she deeply understands the support working women need to take care of their families. Driven by her empathy and drive to support working women, she has served on the board of 9to5 Working Women. 9to5 is an advocacy group that fights to improve working conditions for women.Along with the combined efforts of other supporters, Sonya has worked tirelessly to improve and expand economic opportunities for women. Sonya has been one of the most vocal and vociferous advocates in the campaign for the Family Care Act. Her advocacy, along with other supporters, had resulted in the Family Care Act being passed into law in Georgia by the former Governor Nathan Deal. The Family Care Act expands access to job-protected sick leave to Georgia workers. Sonya understands the critical role inclusion plays in her community and its undeniable relevance in the current socio-political environment. Her top-notch skills as a community organizer, strategist, and advocate for issues impacting women help women in the community and in general. Her dream and vision to see women advance and barriers against their advancement erased drive her efforts to contribute to women’s cause.
