Sonya Michel served as Director of United States Studies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars from 2009-2011, after which she returned to her position as Professor of History at the University of Maryland, College Park. In 2015 she retired from UMD but continues to conduct research on migrant women care workers and their families. She is also painting and making collages. One of her paintings will be exhibited at the "Bright and Bold" show at Serendipity Labs, Bethesda, Maryland, starting in January 2018.Michel is the author of Children’s Interests / Mothers’ Rights: The Shaping of America’s Child Care Policy, and co-editor of Civil Society and Gender Justice: Historical and Comparative Perspectives; Child Care at the Crossroads: Gender and Welfare State Restructuring; Mothers of a New World: Maternalist Politics and the Origins of Welfare States; and Behind the Lines: Gender and the Two World Wars. She was founding editor of the journal Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State and Society. Michel is also completing a study entitled Old-Age Insecurity: Instabilities and Inequities in U.S. Retirement Provision, 1945-Present, to be published by Princeton University Press.Michel earned her Ph.D. in American Civilization at Brown University in 1986. She has also taught at Brandeis, Harvard, and Princeton Universities, and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and at Chicago. Michel has held Bunting Institute (Radcliffe), Spencer Foundation, Davis Center at Princeton University, NEH, Woodrow Wilson Center, and Fulbright fellowships. She has given numerous invited lectures and papers across the United States and abroad. She also served on committees for the American Historical Association, the Social Science History Association, and the European Social Science History Conference.Specialties: Poverty and social policy; child care; pensions; elder care; migration; global governance; equality and social justice.
