When calibrations are required, instruments are picked up at the Boeing Applied Physics Lab at Boeing Field. Delivered to the Radiation Calibration Lab at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. An inventory including model and serial number for each instrument is made at the time of pickup. This inventory list is normally made up by the Physics Lab prior to releasing the instruments. When instrument calibration is completed, personnel at Swedish sent notification that meters are ready for pickup. Instruments are then transported back to Boeing Applied Physics Lab. Special instruments which do not require normal radiation calibration are kept separate and are taken back to the office or place of business of the Radiation Specialist where they are inventoried and recorded with model number, serial number and type of calibration required. A request is sent to each vendor, usually via email, with instrument information and type of calibration needed, including a quote request for the calibration to be performed. Some vendors have an Instrument Return Form, Service Order Estimate or RMA Form, which needs to be completed and sent to the vendor. Once a quote is received, a Purchase Order is requested from Dade Moeller & Associates. When received, that Purchase Order is packaged with the instrument and shipped to the vendor.The vendor is instructed to ship the calibrated instrument directly to the Boeing Applied Physics Lab. The special instruments shipped to vendors other than to the Swedish Radiation Lab will include Radiomagnetic Sensors, Medical X-Ray Meters, Gauss/Tesla Field Meters, Magnetic Probes, Non-ionizing Meters, Neutron Detectors, Magnetic Field Meters and Light Detectors. Occasionally, some of these meters will require repair, as specified by Boeing Applied Physics Lab, when sent in for calibration.All this was learned as I interned with Larry Ikenberry to facilitate and coordinate the needs of all parties involved.
