About Sophia Khan
I'm a teacher trainer turned editor with more than 25 years' experience in the ELT industry. I've worked in the UK, France, Australia and Singapore in a range of roles including Director of Studies, Business English Trainer, and EAP Co-ordinator, and have specialised in teacher development, course design and materials writing since 2004.As a teacher trainer, I have worked on short courses, workshops and webinars for both pre-service and in-service teachers from around the world, including the Cambridge CELTA, English for Young Learners, and bespoke courses for Ministry of Education teachers from Thailand, China and Singapore, as well as Workplace Literacy trainers in Singapore. I'm also an IELTS Speaking examiner and a DELTA local tutor. As a materials writer and designer, I've created ESP courses for academic English, IELTS, conversation skills, literature and pronunciation, as well as numerous teacher training courses including 10-20 hour suites on teaching and developing the macro-skills, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar. I've also been involved in test-writing and assessment, creating entry and achievement tests for language learners and teachers along with marking rubrics as well as systems for portfolio submission and assessment. I also created a high school entry test for overseas students drawing on CEFR and the English Profile. As a writer and editor, I've created copy and content for various websites and blogs, and articles for various magazines and journals, including British Council Singapore, #AusELT, and the English Australia Journal. I also develop user-friendly in-house systems manuals and guides. I was on the editorial team of the English Australia Journal for 10 years, developing their style guide and systems, and working with new and experienced writers to develop their articles for print. I'm also an experienced copyeditor and have adapted texts into graded readers for international EFL/ESL markets for Penguin Random House. My particular field of interest is continuing professional development for teachers at any stage of their careers, and particularly via online communities of practice. I'm also one of the founding members of the #AusELT network (a hashtag, blog, Facebook page and chat community focusing on CPD, industry developments, and networking between professionals from or connected to ELT in Australasia).
