Master's by Research degree in Biological Sciences under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Lena Wilfert looking into the following main areas:- How do agri-environmental schemes impact the diversity, structure and stability of bumblebee populations? - Do different types of management systems have different effects? - How does the genetic relatedness of different visiting pollinator species impact the prevalence and transmission of emerging infectious diseases both within and between bee species? - Are there differences in population structure between mainland and islands? - Does genetic structure of island/mainland site have an effect of disease prevalence?Experience includes:- Chelex DNA extractions of bumblebees and honeybees- Species differentiation PCRs for Bombus terrestris/lucorum and Bombus hortorum/ruderatus- Conducting multiplex PCRs with microsatellite primers- Analysing microsatellite data with ABI machines- Understanding of different pieces of software including Genemapper, Geneious, and Arlequin- Continued statistical analysis working with and organising large data sets- Field work collecting pollinator species and habitat surveys- Lone working whilst reading journals to educate within the field of study- Managing undergraduate and postgraduate internships; teaching lab skills such as DNA extractions and PCRs- Assisting undergraduates in the lab group with their third year projects- Working closely with the postdoctorate with the aim to publish data

Expedition Leader of a student led team to carry out preliminary herpetofauna research in Bawan Forest, Borneo. - Working alongside OuTrop, an in-country sponsor already conducting primate research, to organise the logistics of the expedition such as fundraising and training- Creating a proposal for the expedition which would be used alongside grant applications- Writing grants to secure funding from the University of Exeter Les Haplin Trust and the Whitley Wildlife conservation trust- Understanding and evaluating different research techniques such as pit fall traps and day and night transect surveys to collect data such as weight and length which along with photos were used to identify species- Consolidating data and collaborating as a team upon our return to publish a report of or findings
