Peer Advocates participate in creating a healing environment, offering peer support, and facilitating the opportunity to turn what often gets called “crisis” into a learning opportunity in a house that offers a non-clinical alternative to hospitalization. Also includes support offered by phone on the Peer Support Line. Care received at Afiya is empowerment-based, and client directed.

Amherst, Ma

Distributing funding to those seeking the abortion procedure and lacking adequate funding and/or support. Offering guidance and counsel for callers unsure of next steps during their waiting period for the procedure. Offering resources for care, and further funding.

Peer mentor, workshop facilitator and leader. Working with fellow students to provide counsel for their reproductive, mental, and sexual health issues, as well as providing them with unbiased resources to seek further help. Organizing workshops and public health campaigns based on community needs, i.e., safer substance use, healing from sexual trauma, and using holistic remedies and self care to create a healthier college experience. Peer mentors advised students on matters of insurance, navigating the Title IX process, and choosing from various contraceptive methods.

Campaigning for local pro-choice candidates, opposition research, phone banking, repro- ductive rights advocacy work. My fellowship focused on building King County legislators’ case to prevent Crisis Pregnancy Centers from being able to distribute fear-based, anti- choice information to the people of Seattle, specifically targeting women of color, under the guise of operating a medical clinic.
