At Opus, I developed laser-based gas analyzers to quantify the emissions of motor vehicles under real world conditions. Although broadband light sources have traditionally been used for these kind of measurements, today laser-based analyzers (with better sensitivity and higher resolution) are needed since the advent of modern vehicles as well as fuel standards have led to a remarkable reduction in driving emissions. The developed laser based sensor was able to measure the emissions of NO, NO2, CO, and CO2 from moving vehicles exhaust.

During my PhD, I developed optical laser sensors to detect and measure different gaseous species. I worked on two absorption based techniques, Wavelength Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS) and Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopy (CRDS). These techniques not only can provide high precision measurements, but also can be compacted in small volumes (~3 L) and light weights (~3 kg). Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) were used as the light source to cover the strongest absorption features of the target species in mid-infrared (MIR) spectral region. The developed miniaturized sensors were used for aerial (using a UAS) and ground based measurements of atmospheric ammonia near agricultural sites.

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy, as a non-destructive technique, was used to distinguish opium-addicted from healthy people. This was based on the differences in their finger nail's LIBS spectra which evaluate the relative abundance of each constituent element in the sample.
