Lead Assigning Editor, Credit Cards
CurrentNerdWallet's mission: Providing clarity for all of life's financial decisions. We cover credit cards, banking, insurance, investing, small business, student loans and more. As lead editor on the credit cards vertical, our longest-established, highest-revenue business unit, my job involves:• Guiding a team of writers and editors as they help consumers understand how credit works, the huge role it plays in their lives and how they can use it to their advantage. • Understanding all aspects of the credit card marketplace, from sign-up bonuses to rewards redemptions, from APRs to CVVs, to guide our readers to the right products for their needs — and steer them away from the wrong ones.• Working closely with business partners to ensure that our content aligns with company priorities at the same time it serves consumers, all while maintaining a strong, independent editorial voice.
Copy Editor
As a copy editor during the rapid expansion of NerdWallet's content team, it was my job to make sure:• We speak to our readers in a language that makes them feel comfortable.• We explain complex subjects in a manner they can easily understand.• We demonstrate to our audience that we're on their side.
Owner, Editor And Writer
Soucy Editorial, my freelance business, provided editing, writing, design and project management services to an array of clients, from publications with millions of readers to private individuals with an audience in the dozens. Among the highlights: For more than six years, I singlehandedly produced the USA TODAY Weekly International Edition, a joint venture between Gannett and Tribune Media Services. My writing appeared on websites of nationally recognized brands, Including Experian, TurboTax and Office Depot. I helped an editor of niche magazines significantly raise the quality of the content in his titles, resulting in higher circulation and audience engagement. My clients received the highest-quality work — delivered on time, every time.
Copy Editor
Meredith is a leading publisher of lifestyle magazines and websites, with scores of titles related to food, crafts, home and garden, health and family, and more. My specialty: home design. First as a freelancer and later as an employee, I became the lead copy editor or proofreader on a variety of titles, many of them under Meredith's flagship Better Homes and Gardens brand. Among them: Kitchen + Bath Ideas Beautiful Kitchens & Baths Traditional Home Tuscan Style Décor Elegant HomesThis work requires copy editing skills, of course. But it also requires a thorough understanding of each title's audience and voice. Further, while handling multiple projects simultaneously, I had to be able shift on the fly and tailor my editing to each title's unique personality.
Copy Editor
USA TODAY was, at the time I worked there, the largest-circulation newspaper in the country and a brand recognized worldwide. As a copy editor in the News section, I handled national, foreign and political news. I edited for grammar, style and structure and wrote headlines, photo captions and other display type, but my contributions went well beyond chasing commas: I led multiple sessions on writing and editing topics for the newspaper's internal training program, as well as for outside venues such as the Freedom Forum, the Wilmington Writers' Workshop and the annual convention of the National Hispanic Journalists Association. I served on a task force that overhauled policies on fact-checking and attribution to increase accuracy in the news pages. In 2002, I was the first copy editor ever to receive USA TODAY's internal award for contributions to enterprise journalism, for my role in a first-of-its-kind examination of the factors that decided who lived and who died at the World Trade Center. In 2005, I received the inaugural Robinson Prize, the highest award given by the American Copy Editors Society.
Copy Editor
The Des Moines Register of the early to mid-1990s was a nationally respected newspaper with a reputation for quality and empathy. As a copy editor on the night desk, I handled material from the city, state, business and wire desks. I also filled a variety of other roles as needed: designing pages; assembling the daily national and foreign news lineup; writing the lighthearted "People in the News" column; preparing radio-ready versions of Register stories; and occasionally running the city desk late at night.
