Emily C. Sousa received her M.Sc. in Rural Planning and Development at the University of Guelph and her B.A. in International Development Studies (specialization Rural and Agricultural Development). Emily is a land use planner specializing in farm property, agricultural planning, and land use. Her past research explored agri-environmental program delivery to support the uptake of conservation practices on dairy farms across Canada, municipal capacity to respond to agricultural priorities in land use planning, the effectiveness of provincial farmland protection policies, as well as policy development and implementation for on-farm diversified uses to balance on-farm development, farmland protection, and agricultural viability. She has presented her research to the leading policy and decision-makers across Ontario, including the Greenbelt Council, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, the Niagara Escarpment Commission, and the Minister of Agriculture, Food, and Rural Affairs. She is a Registered Professional Planner with the Ontario Professional Planners Institute. She is a past Highly Qualified Personnel Scholar with the Ontario Agri-food Innovation Alliance. In her spare time, Emily volunteers as an appointed member of the farmers market advisory committee with the City of Cambridge.Internationally, Emily held a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship with Universities Canada, Rideau Hall Foundation, and Community Foundations of Canada. She has worked as a knowledge management intern with the Food Rights Alliance in Kampala, Uganda, developing knowledge-based systems to effectively engage stakeholders in realizing the right to food. Most recently, she has worked under the advisory of Dr. Manish Raizada to explore low-cost solutions for sustainable production practices for smallholder farmers to conserve genetic resources and adapt to climate change in SubSaharan Africa. Her research on origins and pathways of underutilized African food crops in Westernized food systems has informed cartographic projects at National Geographic. Emily has also worked with CUSO International in researching best practices for promoting women-owned agricultural production systems to enhance maternal and child health in rural Ethiopia. Emily has cultivated her passion and knowledge for sustainable food systems through these opportunities. She wishes to pursue her Ph.D. in researching sustainable food systems in an interdisciplinary program in the future.
