Lead the Innovation Team for the merged organization of ISTE and ASCD. Focus on new, impactful, scalable products, prototypes, and partnerships that moves the needle for every educator and every learner.

As part of the executive leadership team, I lead the Learning team at ISTE. This includes the ISTE Standards team that creates and provides stewardship for the ISTE Standards for students, educators, and leaders; our professional learning services team that provides consulting for districts, states, and countries; our publications team which publishes several books each year, two peer reviewed journals, and articles for the ISTE blog; the EdSurge team which provides independent reporting and research; our advocacy team that engages Congress and the executive branch on federal issues as well as state and district policy; and our international team working in Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia. Recent projects include creating the ISTE Certification for Educators, a vendor neutral, tool agnostic competency-based certification program; ISTE U, a professional learning portal for educators covering topics like AI for Educators and Digital Citizenship in Action; expanding Future Ready Librarians work with a crosswalk of ISTE standards and the Future Ready Librarian Framework; relaunching the EdSurge Product Index to help district decision makers make better ed tech purchasing decisions; launching Course of Mind to help educators make better use of the learning sciences in their classrooms; and launching Skillrise to bring next generation technology competencies to the workforce.

Learning Accelerant is a consultancy that applies the learning sciences to help organizations redesign learning experiences to address the cognitive, emotional, and aesthetic needs of learners. We are currently leading a John Templeton Foundation grant to establish a community of practice across 10 Philadelphia public high schools with real-world learning/CTE programs. These schools are implementing a new advisory curriculum focused on helping learners discover and develop purpose and creating opportunities for students to gain expertise aligned to their chosen purpose. We call this process Purpose-Driven Expertise development. Other past and present projects include: designing an instructional mentoring model for a coding bootcamp; leading the creation of augmented reality experiences for an art museum, developing potential funding areas for a new philanthropic organization, and providing executive consultation and mentoring for start-ups in next gen assessment, literacy, and digital health.

Worked with partners to develop online and blended higher education programs with strong social learning features to create a community of learners. Provided design consultation in descriptive and predictive learning analytics, content curation systems, live classroom and study group video solutions, peer tutoring systems, internships and practicums with emphasis on authentic, situated learning, case-based, problem-based, and project-based learning, alumni mentoring, certification and progressive credentialing, etc.Directed a diverse team of full-time employees and contractors at the K12 Utah product development office. Projects included newly designed AP Exam Review courses and an online health curriculum and interactive museum kiosk in partnership with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Directed a remote product development team of full-time employees and contractors in Oklahoma City who develop K-12 products capable of adaptive remediation. Served on LMS evaluation and strategy committee reporting to the executive team. Served on cross-departmental blended learning strategy committee.

Participated in strategic planning for the company, formed strategic partnerships, presented product development strategy at board meetings, liaised with senior leadership at Middlebury CollegeLed a multi-national team in conceptualizing and creating innovative new language courses built upon the immersive, communicative, task-based pedagogy inspired by Middlebury College’s extremely successful summer language school. Integrated academic culture and business culture to allow team members to work together successfully. Lead a combination of full-time, contract, and remote team members in the design, development, and delivery of a portfolio of 31 foreign language courses serving more than 50,000 students in the K-12 market in 27 states states attending virtual public schools, online public district programs, public charter schools, hybrid programs and private schools. Set strategic direction for course portfolio and seek opportunities to expand offerings. Opened new markets by leading the creation of five new foreign language and ESL courses aimed at adults and distributed to public libraries in English-speaking countries world wide via a partnership with Gale Cengage Learning. Identified, recruited, and hired a team of 25 employees, contractors, and media and graphic design companies over the course of eight months to conceptualize, design, prototype, produce, brand, and deliver five 50-hour courses that required a new pedagogical approach and a new technology infrastructure. Instrumental in designing a new authoring and delivery system optimized for the rapid creation and global distribution of language courses. Served as executive producer of 40-minute educational adventure story that was integrated into the scope and sequence of our product to provide motivation, contextualization, and to make learning more fun.

Assisted director in shaping strategic direction of Technology Assisted Language Learning (TALL) Group, conceptualizing adaptive blended learning environment, leading projects and budgets, achieving key objectives, and effectively communicating with university leaders. Grew organization from four employees to 60.Managed A/V, graphic design/illustration, and evaluation departments. Served as executive producer of two original 30 minute short films that combined dramatic narrative with contextual language learning. Directed China Legal English Project. Administered State Department grant to provide Legal English training to Chinese judges and prosecutors in association with Temple University Law School, New York University Law School, Tsinghua Law School (Beijing), the National Judges College (Beijing), and the Prosecutors Training Facility (Guangzhou). Developed 50 hours of original case-based, adaptive legal English training courseware focused on international trade law. Delivered multiple on-site blended learning experiences in China. Directed the English Certification Test, a computer-based standardized test of English fluency at 30+ locations in South America, Asia, and the U.S. Designed and managed the development of a web-based administration and rating system to support the test.

Helped grow and merge the four-person Office of Course Development into the 100 person Center for Instructional Design. Collaborated to recommend and establish enterprise-wide instructional design processes and hire staff. Championed the implementation of people and processes to maximize the aesthetic design, appeal, and usability of our work.Served as lead designer and manager of high-enrollment, blended learning, general education course development projects in English, Science, and Religion.Coordinated the work of content experts, editors, graphic designers, illustrators, 2-D and 3-D animators, and Flash, Java, and HTML programmers.

Designed and developed an online Air Quality Meteorology course for the US Environmental Protection Agency in conjunction with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Designed and led Internet Science Summer Camp.
