About Rachel Girling

Working in education for 17 years and in my final school role as Assistant Principal, I saw children's mental health, attendance, and relationship with school deteriorate. In September 2022, I founded Sowing Seeds Alternative Learning as I know the one-size-fits-all approach to education wasn't sustainable and has to change. I founded Sowing Seeds to provide educational and wellbeing support packages to schools and students across West Yorkshire. In the space of 18 months, Sowing Seeds has grown to have a team of 35+ tutors and counsellors, with a proven track record reintegrating children back into education and helping them secure qualifications. Many children come to Sowing Seeds with differing levels of anxiety and SEMH needs. There are many triggers that can cause a child to feel overwhelmed and anxious in social situations leading to increased absenteeism. When a neurodivergent child or young person’s needs are not met, they can struggle to access full-time mainstream education due to dysregulation, sensory overload and school-based trauma - this then leads to emotional-based school avoidance. As a non-registered Alternative Provision, Sowing Seeds delivers a blended approach by providing a Confidence Curriculum and bespoke tuition for each child. Our approach is to use a trauma-informed and relational approach to let each child learn at a pace and in a style they feel safe and comfortable.. In the past year, our family-centred approach has helped children reintegrate back into education and we now deliver a 6 week programme. In October 2022, I was a guest speaker at the launch of Bradford's Start Up West Yorkshire event and she was on the panel sharing advice to members of Bradford's community. In November 2022, I was a guest speaker at Dean Clough in Halifax at the Inaugural Enterprise West Yorkshire Start Up Forum, alongside Mayor of West Yorkshire's, Tracey Brabin. I was also a guest of Bradford Council’s at Bradford Telegraph & Argus Retail, Leisure & Hospitality Awards 2022. In 2023, Sowing Seeds received the 'Highly Commended Award' for Community Involvement in the Bradford Education Awards plus were finalists in the Bradford Means Business 2023 'New Business of the Year Award.'
