About Sara L. Kreiss
Spaces For Play, INC (SFP) was founded in 1999 with a mission to create safe and creative outdoor learning environments using natural elements and a variety of play experiences for children. With my background as a teacher, director, and adjunct professor working with children in outdoor spaces, it was clear there was a disconnect between Early Childhood play theory and the outdoor opportunities provided to children in practice. My goal with founding SFP was to create functional, well-designed outdoor areas from design-to-build. In addition to a master's degree in early childhood education, I have completed the rigorous requirements to become a Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and am certified with the National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS). SFP is committed to developing playgrounds that support research in play theory, child development, safety, and accessibility guidelines for all children. I have participated in training as a Nature Explore-Research in Education Trainer, and international studies in Scotland, Germany, Prague and Ireland. I have attended the international forum, presented by Reggio Children in Reggio Emilia, Italy and participated in the Environmental Design Conference at ChildSpace, New Zealand. Periodically, I speak at educational conferences on how to design and build safe and accessible natural outdoor learning environments. Currently, Spaces For Play, INC averages between $4-5 million in completed projects a year for mostly educational settings. SFP completes between 50-60 playground projects yearly as the general contractor for up to million-dollar budgets. Since 1999, SFP project managed over 1500 custom play environments.
