I find that the best product development process is one where, to steal a phrase from the Agile Manifesto, we "maximise the work not done." In practice this means ensuring we make smart decisions at the right times, leave options open when appropriate, validate assumptions as quickly and cheaply as possible, and keep the cost of change low.There are lots of methodologies that I can call on - Agile, Lean UX, UCD, Design Thinking, Design Sprints, Swarm Weeks among many others - and I like to have the broadest possible toolbox to choose from. Every project is different; every organisation is different. A bespoke approach is the only way I can guarantee to deliver optimum value to any given client.However, there is a core set of techniques I use day-in, day-out, and those are the ones that de-silo design. Your people of every specialism have the ability to be creative, indeed they MUST be creative or the product will never deliver as a holistic proposition. I teach by doing that design is not magic, and in every engagement I make sure that the discipline and value of design are made clear and inclusive to everyone. This is where in my opinion, there is no distinction between User Centric Design and Culture.The result of a successful cultural shift is that design can operate on real data, not assumptions, and the whole product development team can rely on well-researched insight and experience to underpin every decision they make.
