About Sparsh Ahuja

I am an award-winning filmmaker and National Geographic Explorer working primarily in animation and documentary. My work explores themes of migration and belonging, and has featured in MUBI, The New Yorker, TIME, The BBC, Al Jazeera, NOEMA, NOWNESS Asia, and The Economist. My documentary short, “Birdsong”, premiered at SXSW 2023, was shortlisted for the Grierson, IDA and BIFA Awards, and was acquired by The Guardian as a Vimeo Staff Pick. My VR Film, “Child of Empire” - financed through the Venice Biennale Gap Financing Market - premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2022, played Sheffield DocFest, and MIFF, and won the inaugural XR History Award from the Korber-Stiftung Foundation in Hamburg. I am currently in development on my directorial debut, “Fear and Loathing in Kathmandu”, funded by VicScreen. In 2023, I was one of the 12 factual producers selected for VicScreen and Screen Australia’s “Originate Factual” incubator. In 2024, my reporting on Indigenous land rights disputes was a finalist for the LA Press Club Award. My work has toured institutions such as The Victoria and Albert Museum, BFI Southbank, and ForumDesImages in Paris, and has been supported by the British Council, Australia Council for the Arts, Doc Society, Ford Foundation, Ian Potter Cultural Trust, and the CatchLight Fellowship amongst others.

    Founded Project Dastaan, an award-winning digital humanities initiative, directing an international team of researchers, creative technologists and documentary filmmakers to create interactive resources on the 1947 Partition of the Indian subcontinent.- Coordinated the virtual reconnection of over 15 survivors of the Partition to their ancestral homes across the India-Pakistan border. This involved a rigorous process of in-depth interviews, coordination of film teams, and transforming gathered footage into bespoke VR experiences, while ensuring sensitivity and respect for survivors' mental health- Received acclaim as an innovator in new media storytelling and visual culture by international media, including being listed in the British History Curriculum and National Archives, features in TIME, The BBC, The New Yorker, Reuters, Nikkei, NPR, and National Geographic amongst others. My work was endorsed by Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai and Gabo Arora, director of Immersive Storytelling and Emerging Technologies at John Hopkins University.- Led an international exhibition tour in 2022 to mark the 75th anniversary of the Partition, including showings at renowned venues such as the V&A (the world’s biggest art museum) in London, ForumDesImages in Paris, Partition Museum Delhi and Amritsar in India, National History Museum Lahore in Pakistan and an upcoming tour in 2025 in the USA, funded by Ford Foundation, Arts Council England, and Australia Council for the Arts. Raised over $200,000 USD for the project.• Managed a successful $28000 USD Kickstarter Campaign with over 450+ individual donors, exceeding target by 30%.

    - Collaborated with SOAS University on an AHRC funded research project, employing qualitative research methods such as surveys and participatory workshops to explore how VR technology and visual media can be used to inform pedagogical practices.- Led the production of a VR industry whitepaper, working with a PhD researcher to create a case study on how new entrants to the immersive industry in the UK could access public funding and distribute their projects. This was commissioned by Immerse UK and Arts Council England.- Awarded grant by Enhancing Research Culture Fund at University of Warwick to conduct a research project entitled “Visual Identification With Partition History Through VR and Traditional Animation”

    I produced the anthology of animated shorts, Lost Migrations. Lost Migrations premiered at the BFI Southbank and receiving tremendous audience response, with 3 premiere screenings selling out within days.- Digital Premiere on MUBI INDIA and NOWNESS ASIA- Funded by the British Council and National Geographic Society- Led the production of a fully responsive touchscreen map, website, and classroom resources on the Partition, available in English, Hindi, Urdu and Bangla.- Worked with Stanford University SPICE (Stanford Program on International and Cross-Cultural Education) to develop a new social studies on Partition, decolonization and migration.
