I work in the clouds, and most familiar with AWS, but have been getting familiar with GCP. I lead the procurement and adoption of Hashicorp Vault as a tool to enhance developer and operational security. This has resulted in not only improved product security, but improved engineering practices as a whole. Key Projects:- Lead on internal CA refactor with Vault- Custom OTP for internal systems using Vault's signing backend- Custom middleware (python/Django REST mostly) to tie together Vault and the product line.- Creator of user access review tool for SO(X/C) review (python/Django + custom connectors to internal and SaaS applications)- Continuous engagement with internal teams and asset management SaaS provider to improve our experience and their product. - Developed Gitlab CICD pattern and pipeline to automate Hashicorp Vault resource management using python to generate Terraform based on YAML manifests- Developed a template for easy lambda job deployments so that developers need only worry about the code, and things like alerts, logs, authentication and schedules are taken care of.- Chief integrator, and lowliest of data custodian (you know the one that cleans up the bodily fluids) of information going into/out from the asset management system.- Technical advisor on most (SSO) integrations, and helpdesk vendor change/migration.

Everywhere I work I somehow end up writing asset management software, and it was no different at Arista. Initially we tried to track IT assets with a python/Django app I wrote because I was tired of maintaining the spreadsheet that never seemed to be "up-to-date" and I noticed this was causing issues for others as well...and I wanted to learn Django. It ended up being great for improving my python and Django skills, but as people started to use it and ask for more out of it, it became really bad for my time and other projects. Key project: Migrate from custom SAM to SaaS SAM- I took the initiative to evaluate some SaaS solutions out there and came across Oomnitza (great product and team btw), which I pitched to the IT teams and management, and ultimately got it procured. - Steered internal teams/data owners, sometimes kicking and screaming towards migrating their data into the new system.- I had to write a few custom connectors to sync external data sources...and that was the easy part. - Driving the data owners to "clean up" their data was where the real work began...a lot of spreadsheets, bulk uploads, and what seemed like endless followup meetings finally got us fidelity to where management was comfortable to start taking action based on the data.Accomplishments:- Actionable visibility of end-user and IT assets- Contacts don't lapse accidentally anymore and licenses can be restocked, and reordered ahead of time.- The system is driving reporting, and IT compliance audits in a "self service" manner...except for those "really special" reports that need a little code, or perhaps a little architecture tweak.- On/off boarding processes have become clearer and more defined.- Helpdesk productivity and overall end-user data integrity has gone up.

As an "application engineer" I was doing integration work, which I find fun and challenging. In this role I got to engage with various internal teams/customers I wouldn't normally have been exposed to; listen to their problems and architect and implement solutions using technology. The most important thing I learned was how to pitch and how to move on when a pitch isn't accepted. Notable projects:Company SSO Implementation:- Appointed as lead implementation engineer on the roll out of Onelogin to the company. - Lead internal teams/stakeholders in preparing and testing their SaaS applications for SSO with Onelogin.Achievements: - The company uses the SSO provider for 90%-95% of applications used, even custom internal applications, which is great for security and audit purposes...but a nightmare should your SSO provider "go down".- Users love the ease-of-use that comes with a centralized way to access all the applications they need to perform their job.Custom Asset Tracker Database:I gave this to myself as a side project to learn Django and improve the tracking of IT infrastructure. Initially pitched it to the team that managed network working gear, and after that success I pitched it to the team that managed company issued laptops, and it just took off after that.Quote to Order:- Worked with internal orders team to change their process from primarily email into a Saleforce integration.Achievements:- Learned about the Salesforce platform and APEX code.- Created an asynchronous application/process on Salesforce to generate quotes that would convert to sales orders that would pass into the ERP system. Manufacturing Database Aggregation:- Assumed technical lead and project manager role on consulting project for manufacturing database consolidation to Amazon RDSAchievements:- Manufacturing processes have increased in reliability substantially and are even fault tolerant at this point.- Learned how to manage a project with outside consultants.

Started as Arista's #3 IT employee and that provided substantial freedom from the start. In this role, I introduced new, useful technologies and processes that improved stability, maintainability and security. Notable projects:Version control for IT- First thing I noticed was that engineering was using Perforce and IT wasn't using anything, so I stood up an internal Gitlab VM. - That has since grown organically as I started to share code out to IT and other internal groups.Achievements:- Gitlab use has grown from 3 initial users to 50% of the company with thousands of projects.Proliferated Puppet for infrastructure:- Assumed/inherited lead on IT's puppet implementation. A single contractor was using this to do his work and trained me. Once I was proficient enough with it I started to onboard the other members of the teamAchievements:- Infrastructure is less hand-crafted and easier to maintainActiveDirectory/LDAP auth on IT infrastructure- This was my first project and it was something the other sysadmins were having a hard time implementing, and I definitely understand why..., but once it was working it was easy to write a puppet module and get it pushed to every system IT was managing. Centralized Fail2Ban:- Wrote a PHP REST API for a centralized fail2ban database. - Wrote a front end in PHP that displays offender data.- Created an app using python/Django for a “security dashboard”Achievements:- With the data centralized other edge nodes are aware of offenders preemptively.

Initially hired as a software developer. After the first year I inherited the IT infrastructure for our main office. I would later expand the infrastructure into and across two additional offices and an experimental/startup data center where I was ultimately responsible for the customer experience and support.- Managed day-to-day IT and a small group of techs across three offices and supporting 40-50 internal users, and customers.- Created and implemented the base infrastructure architecture for customers and internal operations across multiple sites using Force10s (for switching), ClearOS (firewall and routing), and OpenVPN.- Switched company from analog phones to VoIP phones to asterisk running FreePBX. - Created a “jumpbox” image for various tech activities such as: PXE boot (CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian, Xen) using seed and kickstart files, IPMI tool, network monitoring (Cacti), machine imaging (Clonezilla server), SSH, hardware monitoring (SNMP) - Created an application for a DoD contractor on iOS that they used to demo their new multi-branch communication technology using LED strips and Arduino controllers (C++ base code)- Wrote a call tracking system in PHP used by sales and marketing.- Created a customer experience website using PHP/Drupal 7 for one of our subsidiaries that specialized in the sale of electroluminescent wire.

This is the job that put me through school and transformed me from "kid that knows about computers" to manager of IT infrastructure of a small - medium size business. Towards the end I moved the company towards selling their surplus equipment on eBay and Amazon to where they began to pivot their business model from telecom solutions to surplus equipment resale.- Took the initiative to setup and manage eBay and Amazon sales accounts boosting company revenue by >30%.- Saved company ~200% on phone services by switching analog phones to hosted VoIP phones. - Migrated the company email from Outlook to Google Apps for Business, saving the company in longterm licensing and adding unmatched reliability.- Owned the company's onboarding/offboarding processes- Created and pitched an inventory management system in C#- Wrote a parser to read through and extract customer information from large invoice dumps. - Provided support to both in house and remote employees and customers.
