The University of Lethbridge is one of the best primarily undergraduate universities in Canada, having achieved the McLean's rank of no. 2 in the country in that category recently. Since 2017 I have instructed sessionally in the Urban and Regional Studies program. I have the great pleasure and privilege of instructing students in the university's Introduction to Community Planning (Geography 2535) and Contemporary Issues in Community Planning (Geography 4500) courses. During my time with the U of L, and in conjunction with partners at the City of Lethbridge, I have also been a part of the development of an applied studies program focused on the idea of viewing and interacting with parts of the city as a place for experimentation in the built environment. These programs are sometimes referred to as city labs or community labs.It has, and will continue to be, one of the great achievements of my career to take part in the educational journey of some of the next generation of built environment professionals.

The Town of Coaldale is a desirable, vibrant and growing community of almost 10,000 people, with ongoing and consistent growth and investment in residential, commercial and industrial, and institutional development. I was incredibly fortunate to be a part of the Town's leadership team, which in a community of this size means working alongside and supporting the work being done by other members of my team, and not just 'managing' the team. The ability to stay deeply and meaningfully involved in the day-to-day work of the municipality was a big part of what made the role so rewarding. Specific areas of focus in my portfolio included planning, development and design, economic development, and communications.

Lethbridge

The Oldman River Regional Services Commission (ORRSC) is a multi-disciplinary organization providing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and planning and design services to 40+ rural and urban municipalities in Southern Alberta. My role as a Planner with ORRSC was built on a foundation of deep knowledge of planning and design theories, applied techniques, and relevant legislative and regulatory information. Key responsibilities in this role included the development, interpretation and review of major planning and design documents such as Intermunicipal Development Plans, Municipal Development Plans, Area Structure and Redevelopment Plans, Land Use Bylaws, and others. Additionally, I advised community members and municipal administration on a broad spectrum of inquiries and challenges related to planning/design, and provided advisory services to the municipalities assigned to me at Council and Municipal Planning Commission meetings. Key skills/abilities in this role included the technical knowledge of provincial and local legislation and regulation, the ability to build consensus and mitigate conflict, and develop positive relationships (and ultimately trust) through sensitive management of stakeholders involved in planning/design matters large and small.

In my role as Planner with the M.D. I focused on many aspects of planning including environmental, infrastructure, land use, policy, and more on a current, intermediate and long range basis. In addition, I carried out research and provided recommendations regarding policy development and implementation, and interfaced with key stakeholders on a regular basis.

As a Planning Officer with the M.D. I was exposed to a significant number of subdivision and land use intensification applications and proposals. Through the experience provided in this realm I became knowledgeable of Alberta's subdivision and land use regulations and legislation and other relevant provincial and local directives, and honed my verbal and written communication and presentation skills to deliver relevant subdivision and growth-related information to our decision-making authority in a timely manner. Regular exposure to the public planning processes also allowed me to gain valuable experience in on-the-fly problem solving and consensus building.

Brant And Mossleigh, Alberta

Over a two year period I was fortunate to work with a small number of other students and a practicing planning professional, to deliver two statutory plans (ASPs) for two hamlets in Vulcan County. This was an incredibly formative experience and I have always considered it the soft start of my career.
