Hearing the struggles my mother went through as a child, living in poverty in the Philippines, is what instilled my desire to achieve excellence to help ensure that my future will be as successful as possible. Through everyday situations in school and work, I have developed various skills that have made me a valuable asset to any university or business. During my sophomore year, I started working at Dairy Queen, which was my first job. Working there has helped me to develop the skills I already possess and has taught me new skills. My coworkers have different backgrounds and personalities, so learning how to connect with each individual was difficult initially. However, I recognized the importance of developing my social intelligence and chose to persevere in creating good relationships with each coworker. Even though I was only trained to do grill tasks, I took the initiative to learn how to take orders independently. This increased my interactions with customers, which has further developed my communication skills. Working at Dairy Queen has also taught me the importance of teamwork and valuing every individual that I’ve worked with. I’ve observed how vital each worker’s specific skills are and how they contribute to the success of the restaurant. This inspires me to be a strong asset to my team by having excellent work ethics and therefore improving the quality of my work environment and my customer service. During my junior year, I challenged myself by taking multiple advanced placement courses. These courses forced me to improve my prioritization, time management, and organizational skills which were essential to my academic success. They also taught me how to complete tasks meticulously and promptly. Meticulous work often produces excellent results which will benefit me and others. Although my social life was not as vibrant as I would have liked, I know with certainty that I am building a solid foundation to achieve my long-term goals.
