My current project uncovers the centrality of the Department of Commerce to national and foreign economic policy in the 1960s and after. In this moment, the self-proclaimed “Agency of Business” operated as a forum where policymakers and business leaders negotiated the terms of a novel vision of globalization.

ResearcherIndependent Aug 2017 - Jul 2018Shenzhen, Guangdong, ChinaAbstract: China consumed ~45% more concrete from 2011 to 2013 than the United States consumed in the 20th century. China’s prodigious demand for concrete is considered to have been fundamental in preventing the economic collapse of mineral resource exporting countries during the financial crisis of 2008. China used concrete to construct infrastructure including a bullet train system consisting of thirty five thousand miles of rail in less than a decade. While in China, I took the bullet train from Beijing to Shenzhen to grasp the scale of this construction. We passed several small towns each following a similar organization: uniform housing blocks interspersed with shorter structures centered around a train station. These enormous stations, built to impede social unrest by generating employment and capital circulation were beautiful and empty. Sitting next to me, a young Chinese lawyer explained that he was starting his own practice because the Communist Party was promoting an entrepreneurial spirit through public policy designed to incentivize professionals to exchange iron rice bowls for the speculative opportunity of becoming the next startup success. In the city of China’s first stock exchange, I stood in front of a vertical campus designed by a US based architectural firm which housed the headquarters of China’s most successful startup. In the courtyard, surrounded by a ring of flowers, stood a cubic sculpture commissioned by the Communist Party of China that welcomed employees and visitors with the hammer and sickle and the phrase, “Follow our party, start your business.”
