Dr. Spencer Magleby is a consultant in areas related to compliant mechanism and origami-based engineering design, training and mentoring in leadership development and helping organizations create innovative design environments. He is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering at Brigham Young University with 35 years of experience in research, teaching, mentoring, advising and leading of organizational and educational initiatives. At BYU he served 11 years as associate dean for the College of Engineering, and six years as Director of the University Honors Program gaining a reputation for bringing people together to pursue common goals. His research in product design and technology development focused on developing new technologies and applications related to compliant mechanisms and the use of origami to inspire innovative product design. His work has been sponsored by NASA, the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force, the State of Utah, Ford Motor Company and a variety of other industries, consortiums and entrepreneurs. He is an inventor on dozens of patents and author of hundreds of technical publications.Dr. Magleby taught design at the graduate and undergraduate level and is a co-founder of the BYU Capstone Program and the engineering-business graduate program. As director of the BYU Honors Program, he led redesigns of the curriculum to expand offerings across campus and taught courses on Interdisciplinary Thinking and Leadership.
