We found hundreds, and in many cases the first, small-molecule antagonists or inhibitors of 400+ receptors, enzymes, and ion channels in those days, which resulted in many.
After a postdoc doing EPR spectroscopy (interesting but ultimately not too useful), my first job was at Syntex (now defunct, acquired by Roche) in Mississauga, Ontario. Our small group did mechanism-based design, synthesis, and in vitro assay of enzyme inhibitors.
