I was brought in to Lifetouch as an independent consultant to help with their transition from a series of legacy desktop systems to a modern, service oriented set of business systems.Major projects:1. Architecture oversight for new order management system. I was one of four architects who shared oversight responsibility for this project, including design work for major portions of the system, and implementation oversight of the development team of >100 engineers. We worked closely with the project management team to manage risk and ensure that the project delivered on a hard deadline. The system is a combination of packaged software with customizations, and custom developed systems.2. Large web application stabilization. This multi-tier application is the primary customer face to a major line of business, and has high loads during annual peak periods. I led an effort to qualify the performance of the application, and make necessary changes to get resource utilization under control. The scalability issues in the site were solved and, for the first time in several years, there were no scalability issues during the peak season.3. Enterprise Architecture planning. I led an effort to identify technology platforms within a line of business, and put together investment/replacement plans for each major system serving the business.

I was an engineering leader in the group that managed the UI for Lawson's products, and was responsible for architectural oversight of their UI components.My primary activity was leading a team of 6 developers building a proof of concept application. The POC turned out to be so useful that it was turned into a product. This is the first project where I applied Scrum/Agile techniques to a project. I've used them on every project I've led since then.

I was part of a team that designed and implemented a new pharmaceutical rebate processing system to replace their legacy Microsoft Access-based system. This project was particularly complicated, as it involved automating business rules that were customized for each customer relationship. I led an effort to analyze existing contract relationships, design a system to represent those relationships, and implement a system to apply them to the claims flow. The system was successfully deployed.

I was an engineering leader on the development of Macromedia Sitespring, a web-based workflow product for design teams. I was directly involved in all phases of the development of the product, from idea generation and customer visits, product planning, implementation, and deployment. I led one of the three engineering teams that implemented Sitespring.

During this period I worked as a software engineering consultant. My primary focus was on business process software and product strategy consulting. Projects included:Technical strategy development for a large European ERP software developer -- The company was experiencing issues with a stale technology roadmap that impaired their sales efforts. I worked with them to develop a revised roadmap that was well received by customers and minimized technology-based objections during the selling process.Independent advisor to top management during a software acquisition -- I worked as part of the due diligence team during the acquisition and advised management on personnel and technology matters.Design and implementation of a sales tax processing system -- I worked with an ISV to design and lead implementation of a sales tax processing module for their product. The design incorporated unique requirements related to tax jurisdictions, which were difficult to analyze due to a language barrier. I successfully identified the key requirements, and the module went into production successfully.Ecommerce sales tax integration -- I designed and developed a module that integrated a popular sales tax system with a widely used ecommerce platform. The developers of the platform eventually licensed the integration module from me and included it as part of their software package.

I was a co-founder of this startup, which focused on development of corporate multimedia training applications. I set all technology direction for the company, and was co-executive producer on over twenty multimedia projects for delivery on internet and CD-ROM platforms.I designed and implemented two web-based training management systems, one designed as a freestanding product, and a lightweight system designed for delivery with a training product. I designed and led the implementation of a company-wide intranet including web-based sales management applications. I played a major external facing role in the company. I was the primary technical representative in working with our direct sales force in selling to Fortune 100 clients. I also was the primary representative with partners and investors, and was a key participant in the successful IPO of the company.

Led staff of four productizing a client-server voice processing system, which was marketed to independent telephone companies. Implemented revision control and software engineering principles, determined final feature mix for product release, led implementation of system at customer site.

Led staff of 10 implementing software engineering principles in JIT development organization. Moved a 3 million-line software product from ad-hoc to structured, repeatable, predictable development process. Developed technical product plan with input from customers, vendors and staff. Recruited staff when Austin, TX office was closed. Worked as part of team developing registration documents for Fourth Shift's IPO.

Technical leader for "clean slate" new product development. Designed technical architecture, wrote descriptive technical documentation, made presentations to customers. Selected initial target platforms. Led staff of 5 developers on initial implementation work.Principal technical advisor to top management on acquisition of competitor. Provided tier three technical support for database related product issues. Performed on site troubleshooting (typically network issues) for customers with intractable issues. Wrote and edited technical product documentation.

I worked on a contract for the US Army, migrating an existing battlefield simulation application from a proprietary computer to MS-DOS. This included rewriting low level network drivers, revamping serial port interfacing, developing a new set of graphics library for a video overlay subsystem, and porting between Pascal variants.

The PLATO business in CDC is where I started out in the computer industry. I was involved in a Boy Scout Explorer Post at Control Data, and they recruited there to get people to do software testing.Then they needed people to fix the bugs we found, so I did that. I then moved to implementing portions of courseware, and soon was the technical leader of a group implementing portions of their engineering curriculum.I then moved into one of their authoring systems groups, working on systems to support simulation of aircraft systems. This was all part-time while I was in college, and led to my first full-time job.This was a great environment to work in, as many of the concepts you commonly see today in computing were pioneered by the PLATO developers.
