As a worker at the Hansen Student Agricultural Learning Center, I have learned lots about the agricultural related events at Iowa State, as well as what it takes behind the scenes to put them on. HSALC is a major hub for events within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and as a student worker I help to put these events on by setting up necessary materials as well as coordinating with volunteers who put on each event.

I started by helping with daily operations on the feedlot, such as processing and feeding cattle. As I grew older I gained more responsibility in the fields and on the feedlot, by running the grain cart during harvest time, drilling cover crops, and learning how to properly check cattle pens to ensure their health.

As an operations intern with National Beef Packing, I was given a project at the beginning of my summer. I was assigned with water conservation and management within daily plant operations. This has allowed me to familiarize myself with all areas of the packing plant through my project, and find opportunities where National Beef could save water.

In this position I had the opportunity to work on the main feedlot for Adams Land and Cattle. I was in the floater department, which meant I spent time in all three cattle based departments: feeding, processing, and cattle health. In the feeding department I learned how to operate their feed trucks as well as properly read bunks. In the processing barn I honed my skills in ear tagging and implanting, and I gained some exposure to proper ultrasounding in cattle. Finally, while working with cattle health I learned how Adams treats different diseases in cattle.
