About Scott Pieper
“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not.” - Dr. SeussI want to make things better! Leave this world a little better than when I got here. This is what motivates me and the joy I find in accomplishment is what makes me passionate about it. One way of making things better that I’m pretty good at is mission development. These opportunities are most commonly found in nonprofit organizations I suppose, but it doesn’t have to be, so long as there is an altruistic purpose. My track record includes work at an organization that was on the verge of closing its doors forever and is now operating out of a new multimillion dollar location as well as a program that more than doubled the number of service recipients, increased services available through partnerships, and increased staffing.I’m not suggesting that I’m personally responsible for these feats, but I contributed to them independently and as an active team member via communications (print and digital), community outreach (hosting events and public speaking), fundraising activities, donor cultivation, grant solicitation and management, fiscal management, team building, Board relations, volunteer management, and record keeping and reporting. All of these played a role in securing the supportive relationships essential to the above achievements. Not to give away my secrets, but I believe a few of the keys to successful development are: 1) explaining the need, why it matters, and how support will make a difference, 2) making every partnership mutually beneficial, and 3) maintaining regular contact.Up and down the hierarchy chart, those I’ve worked with will say that I’m a great co-worker. I’m always positive, professional, and personable. I go out of my way to set up others for success. I give credit and accept blame. I’m a relentless problem solver, but if I’m not able to solve a problem, I present solutions. I try to end every day doing something that will make tomorrow a little easier. And, my wife says that I’m just “cool”.Away from work, you’re likely to find me outside with the dog, gardening/landscaping, or trying to build something out of reclaimed wood. Inside the house, (after chores) I’m probably with the dog, chopping veggies for my wife, or continuing my quest for the perfect music collection. A proud Kentucky boy (banner hint), I also enjoy “the three b’s”; do you know what those are?I'd love to hear from those interested in making things better together or anyone who'd like to connect for whatever reason. Until then, cheers!

Dui Recovery Court Coordinator
When I started with the court there was funding in place to sustain for about one year. After which it is likely that significant cuts would have been made. Within my first six months I had written and submitted a grant proposal that not only secured sustainability for five years, it also enabled the court to more than double the number of service recipients and expanded resources to include previously unavailable treatment options. Not long after receiving that award, I wrote and submitted another proposal that increased staffing capacity to keep up with the influx of clients. In addition to writing grants, another of my first tasks was to revitalize existing partnerships and cultivate new support. Through these relationship building efforts, I increased program partnerships to provide resources essential to client success. As liaison to foundation board members, I was an active member of a team that raised awareness and secured unobligated funds through outreach efforts and fundraising activities. I helped the board plan and host events as well as community outreach activities that included public speaking and live radio appearances as well as print and digital media communications.Because the court's budget is included as line items within the county budget, I worked closely with the Mayor's Office and Accounting Department under strict guidelines and processes to manage funds. This included securing passage of resolutions by County Commissioners and vendor contracts in conjunction with the Legal Department.I improved efficiency and outcomes of the court while in strict compliance of county policies and grant requirements by working closely with grant liaisons, external partners, the Presiding Judge, and the DUI Recovery Court Team members. I also upgraded internal record keeping and tracking procedures to promote accurate and timely submission of grant and internal reports.
Program Director
In collaboration with executive leadership and the Board of Directors, I had an integral role in development and operations during a period of transformation that led to construction of a new facility and expansion of service capacity. I helped raise nearly half of a million dollars through outreach and fundraising efforts including communications, special events, donor cultivation, and grant writing.I participated in the development and execution of short- and long-term strategic planning. As staff liaison to the Marketing Committee, the Chairperson and I carried out annual communications plans, utilizing various forms of print/digital media and social engagements to raise awareness and support.Further, the Board Treasurer and I established previously non-existent fiscal checks and balances to improve efficiency in budget preparation and management. As Program Director, my daily responsibilities included, well, whatever needed to be done. A "typical" day could have easily included fixing a plumbing leak, interviewing applicants, meeting with Board members, submitting a grant proposal, conducting case management, and then hosting a volunteer activity. By nurturing relationships and achieving strategic objectives, I implemented an evidence-based program model that was significantly more successful than the State average.Working at Dismas was my introduction to nonprofit/mission-driven employment. This experience actually began as an internship to complete my bachelor's degree coursework. However, just a few weeks before my time there was to conclude, the CEO and Director resigned on the same day. The thing is, they were the only two employees at the time. So, I was asked to stick around in an interim staff role until the Board could identify a new CEO. The search took about four months and shortly afterward I was offered the Program Director position. The rest, as they say, is history!
