I proudly embrace the title as “The Last Place Winner”. Being a winner typically means that you finish in first place. This was most definitely not the case when it comes to this native Oklahoman. After a freak accident in 1982 left me paralyzed and clinging to life, the moving journey of my survival that followed would truly come to define my future as a pioneer in sports as I completed my first triathlon in 1986. Little did I know then that I was making history as the second disabled athlete to have completed a triathlon at the time. That remarkable feat made me a true pioneer in both triathlon and the future sport of paratriathlon. Sports that would each go on to become official Olympic and Paralympic sports. A desire to succeed and give back led to my 1990 graduation from The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. A rewarding career as a radiological technologist at Children’s Hospital and OU Medical Center was followed by a successful and award-winning career in sales at GE Healthcare, Vital Images and Toshiba Medical Systems. The journey from surviving a near death accident, relearning to walk and then going on to make history as a disabled athlete encouraged me to focus on making a difference and inspiring others with my story. My life has been filled with dramatic and heartfelt lessons on life and the inner strength it takes to overcome adversities and break barriers no one thought possible. The lessons that I learned along the way have proven, to myself and many others, that disability should be a motivator, not a barrier.

Inspirational SpeakerTeam Gothrive Nov 2021 - PresentI was an unwitting pioneer in the sport of paratriathlon, when in 1986, I was the first athlete with a spinal cord injury to complete a triathlon. My journey to triathlon started in 1982, when I was involved in a near death logging accident that left me paralyzed below the waist. I was told I’d never walk again, but I insisted that I would walk out of that hospital. I suffered a crushed left wrist, crushed face, bruised heart and three crushed lumbar vertebrae. But, numerous surgeries and three grueling months later I walked out of that hospital. After a lengthy stay in a rehabilitation center, I was left to recover on my own going forward. Having been a life long athlete I was always looking to challenge my body. And so, on a cold November afternoon I watched as Julie Moss crawled across the finish line at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships. That moment spoke to me and I knew them that a triathlon ‘em would be my next achievement. Six months later I stood on the starting line of my first triathlon, prepared to give all, just to prove I was still a capable athlete. I struggled the the mile swim, 25 mile bike and gave every last ounce of energy I had to cross the finish line. It was my greatest moment!Though I may have come in last place, I still made history as the first athlete with a spinal cord injury to complete an Olympic distance triathlon. The funny thing was I wouldn’t know that until 2021. Now, all these years later, I’m still competing. Pushing my limits and breaking boundaries no one ever thought possible. Only now I’m doing it after surviving bacterial meningitis, spine fluid leak, two heart attacks, numerous concussions and a horrible disease called arachnoiditis. It’s one of the most painful diseases there is. Despite that, I push my self because I set the limits to my abilities, not the naysayers. If you’re need to motivate your team to achieve the impossible, let me tell my story. I can promise that it will inspire!
