I recently joined Roadrunner venture studios as a Founder in Residence to explore exciting opportunities at the intersection of robotics, manufacturing and materials!

I founded Practical Bionics in 2023 to tap into the unrealized potential of soft bionics for shaping the future of wearable electronics, medicine and robotics. In addition to building out a state of the art shop complete with 5-axis machining, laser processing and material compounding, I also developed a novel robotic additive manufacturing platform from the ground up to enable monolithic fabrication of devices that would have previously been difficult to fabricate.

Northwest Squatch Prints is a small business that me and my partner have started for custom printing and engraving. My primary role is to operate the laser cutter and dream up cool new engraving effects to add to our unique custom products. Check out our Etsy shop at www.nwsquatchprints.com.

At Meta Reality Labs Research, I had the opportunity to work on cutting edge human interface technology for augmented and virtual reality. My projects focused on wrist and glove based input modalities (see linked videos), involving material, process and sensor development with a heavy emphasis on rapid prototyping to quickly test and iterate new ideas.

I am excited to share that Bend Labs was acquired by Nitto Denko in 2022! I developed the original Bend Labs soft sensor technology while working nights and weekends in a small rented lab space while working two other jobs. I cofounded Bend Labs in 2013 and we worked together to develop and scale the technology, create a smart knee brace and VR glove, raise substantial investment capital and generate considerable revenue. In 2018, I made a synergistic transition to a new role at Oculus Research (now Meta Reality Labs Research) to continue my work on developing VR input technologies. I authored the original patents and worked with our brilliant team to turn my original clunky prototype into the product you can purchase today. Bend Labs was acquired by Nitto Denko in 2022 and they are still hard at work delivering world class soft sensing solutions.

I was the first hire at CoNextions Medical and ran a solo R&D operation till we had a compelling proof of concept. I developed the first staple based tendon fixation prototypes and am excited to see that this concept has evolved into the tendon fixation system they have commercialized and are selling today. I had the good fortune of working with a number of successful entrepreneurs from whom I learned an immense amount. Prior to leaving, I led a successful in vitro and in vivo study and wrote an SBIR grant that was funded.

During my time as a research associate at the Musculoskeletal Research Lab at the University of Utah, I worked on a number of research projects related to the biomechanics of tendons and ligaments, as well as some related tissue engineering projects. Throughout this time, I directed undergraduate and graduate students, as well as staff lab technicians in accomplishing aims on two separate federally funded grants that I helped write as a graduate student.

As a graduate student, I studied biomechanics of the musculoskeletal system. I utilized both computational and experimental methods in my work, which required substantial algorithm development, mechanical engineering, motion capture and electronic instrumentation. I also participated in numerous student entrepreneurial activities and won 2nd place in the Tech Titans competition in 2009.

I worked on a hydroacoustic project that monitored the migration of juvenile salmon past hydroelectric dams on the Snake and Columbia River, with my primary role being data analysis and data visualization.
