About Malcolm Sproull

In 2002 I took a holiday from corporate sales and marketing and decided I didn't want to go back into that work again. So, I offered my relationship marketing services to a small non-profit and was introduced to a shadow population of philanthropic people who I fell in love with. That lead me into the nonprofit sector, working for and with numerous nonprofits over a 20 plus year period where I found no one else was reporting on the inner reality of the challenges facing nonprofit fundraising and marketing. So, I have written about it all in a book called Cracking Generosity. It combines my commercial and non-profit sales, fundraising, marketing, client and supporter relations experience to explain how to build a Donor centric Fundraising Enterprise focused on citizen generosity (individual giving and mid to major donors in particular) so that any non-profit "good cause" can thrive. In Cracking Generosity are learnings based on best practice fundraising which will help minimise the pain, frustration and burnout experienced too often by the wonderful people who dare to become involved in nonprofit supporter relations, fundraising and marketing.

  • Cracking Generosity
    Book Author
Cracking Generosity Jan 2014 - Present
    Auckland, New Zealand
Yep. Nine plus years. Whew. But almost there. Based on my experience and observations within ten non-profits over nearly 20 years, Cracking Generosity is a business book for non-profits. Its about how nonprofits can blend grandmother wisdom with smart business thinking to raise sustainable funding. The first section reveals what I found. Based on those findings, the second section outlines a 12-step process any nonprofit can follow in order to crack citizen generosity and produce the compassionate profit they need to sustain their mission. Cracking Generosity will be from October 2022 via issuu.com in the first instance.
  • Sproull & Associates
    Founder & Managing Director
    Sproull & Associates Mar 2016 - Present
    Hunua Ranges, Auckland
Sproull & Associates is a long-overdue consolidation of two decades of "hands in the dirt" experience in the non-profit fundraising and philanthropy arena backed by two decades of experience in sales and marketing and business development. We are generosity factor advisors dedicated to helping non-profits of all sizes to create profitable fundraising enterprises that raise unrestricted money through philanthropy from generous individuals in order that their good cause may thrive. And now we are merging with Fundwel.com to further amplify the nonprofit-donor connection.
  • Childfund New Zealand
    Head Of Strategic Supporter Relations
Childfund New Zealand Jan 2022 - Aug 2023
    Auckland, New Zealand
Sadly another charitable entity that is been lead down the drain.
  • Fundwel.Com
    Director Of Sales
    Fundwel.Com Sep 2021 - Mar 2022
    New Zealand - Global
After 20 years of consulting on nonprofit philanthropy and fundraising, I know intimately the pain points any nonprofit fundraising and marketing manager/director is facing. That's why I am so excited to be part of Fundwel.com, a New Zealand engineered marketing automation solution that I know can resolve that pain by amplifying the nonprofit-donor connection between donors and yet-to-be donors and causes that matter to them. Let me help you reduce the pain.
  • Finz
    Ex-Member
    Finz Aug 2002 - Mar 2022
I can no longer support the culture that has emerged in FINZ. It undermines professional fundraising development and ethics. I recommend New Zealanders involved in fundraising become members of the Australian Institute of Fundraising instead.
  • Franklin Hospice, Pukekohe
    Fundraising & Marketing Manager
Franklin Hospice, Pukekohe Jan 2016 - Nov 2021
    Pukekohe, New Zealand
I started as a consultant to the hospice which has since evolved into a part-time role. I enjoy being back with a small non-profit where we can make a decision on Friday and put it into action the following Monday. This flexibility enables me to test the power of social media platforms to engage and retain donors while we format a fundraising enterprise designed to replace me.
  • Hope Unlimited Trust
    Ceo
Hope Unlimited Trust Feb 2017 - Nov 2017
    Pukekohe
These people are doing fantastic work providing low-income people with professional counselling when they otherwise could not get access to such services. Mostly professional counselling is the domain of the middle and wealthier classes. I can not applaud the work they are doing more loudly. My role here was to restructure and provide business development support for a year.
  • Curekids
    Fundraising Manager (Maternity Cover)
    Curekids Jun 2016 - Sep 2016
    Eden Tarrace, Auckland
An experience that has added to my ongoing research into non-profit fund raising effectiveness.
  • Canteen New Zealand
    Fundraising Manager
Canteen New Zealand Mar 2015 - Mar 2016
    Auckland
This was a one-year contract position. I focused on establishing sustainable cash flow derived from philanthropic fundraising programmes focused on individuals. I also gathered a lot of information for my research on non-profit fundraising effectiveness.
  • Rnzspca
    National Fundraising And Sponsorship Manager
    Rnzspca Jan 2014 - Feb 2015
    Auckland, New Zealand
This was about liaising with every SPCA across the country and together enhancing the brand and enthusing more New Zealanders to financially support the work of this great organisation. I resigned when it became obvious that I could do no more within a federated model as the SPCA was at the time. Under the remarkable leadership of its then CEO, Ric Odom, two years later the RNZSPCA finally united under one brand meaning that a number of my initiatives could then be implemented.
  • Shine (Safer Home In New Zealand Everyday)
    Fundraising Manager
Shine (Safer Home In New Zealand Everyday) Apr 2013 - Jan 2014
    Auckland
As part of a small team of 3, I was leading the development and implementation of a fundraising strategy. These people rock. Domestic abuse is a humungus problem in New Zealand (as it is in many parts of the world) and many people bury their heads in the sand over it. Not these people. They are taking it on full steam ahead and making wonderful progress. In fact lives are being saved. Find out who they are and give them your money.
  • Presbyterian Support Northern
    Supporter Relations Manager
Presbyterian Support Northern Apr 2010 - Mar 2013
This role headed up the fundraising department working closely with marketing. I reversed the downward trend of philanthropic donations that was happening before I arrived.
  • Oxfam New Zealand
    Relationship Development Manager
Oxfam New Zealand Sep 2007 - Apr 2010
This was a fund development role focused on significant gifts that help Oxfam achieve it's mission of introducing the essentials needed to sustain freedom from poverty and injustice in the developing world. The stand out result of that work was my creation of a fundraising initiative I called "The Oxfam100" which was about finding 100 New Zealanders who would raise the bar in the fight against poverty in the developing world. It continues today as a key part of the Oxfam New Zealand fundraising mix.
  • Christian Broadcasting Association
    Fund Raiser
Christian Broadcasting Association Sep 2002 - Sep 2007
I cut my teeth in the non-profit sector at CBA. I was the second staff member so we had great flexibility to put new ideas to work.
  • Sanofi
    Sales Manager
    Sanofi May 1997 - Feb 2002
Initially I managed a national team of GP reps followed by managing a team of similar size focused on retail pharmacy. I worked over this time through several mergers from Roussel who then merged to become Hoechst Marion Roussell and then merged again to become Aventis. And have subsequently become Sanofi.
  • Roussel Pharmaceuticals
    Hospitals Territory Manager
    Roussel Pharmaceuticals 1993 - 1997
    Christchurch
    Same as for Beechams
  • Smithkline Beecham
    Hospital Specialist Representative
    Smithkline Beecham May 1989 - May 1993
    Wellington And Christchurch
Clients were hospital based specialist doctors. Grew sales. Made Beecham more money. Met a bunch of wonderful people in the medical sector.
  • Malcolm Sproull Photography
    Owner/Photographer
    Malcolm Sproull Photography 1977 - 1989
Developed the business from scratch. Sold it as a going concern.
