Newspapers were the perfect training ground for a project manager. For the three decades before the iPhone changed the world in 2007 newspapers invested heavily in technology -- which meant there were lots of high profile projects going on. And because these big projects were always accompanied by dramatic organizational changes I found opportunities to learn change management techniques as well (and yes, some of those lessons were learned the hard way). Thanks to a series of internal recruitments I managed staff in several parts of the company (including IT for 10 years), and I gained extensive project management experience by initiating and leading many local and national projects for the C-Level executives I reported to.My last project at Postmedia was a 3-year project at 10 newspapers to create new products (tablet, phone app) through workflow changes, training and new hardware and software upgrades. This corporate project changed the world for local newsrooms in multiple cities: my role as Change Management Lead included responsibility for end-user training and Go Live implementation at each site.
