Principal Engineer
Current* Building and elevating our distributed multi-region platform, which is built upon Kubernetes and Istio.* Building and maintaining layers of abstraction and toolboxes for our Python APIs and infrastructure.* Writing and maintaining a plethora of backend APIs.
Senior Software Engineer — Backend Platform
Provide a platform of shared tools and services for developers to use in their applications. Build and maintain new features and toolboxes to support these goals. Primarily Python, but some Go and Node/JS as well. Our platform runs on Kubernetes and uses Istio as a service mesh.- Designed and built a Structured Logging library to enable developers to easily turn on structured logging for their applications. We embedded this library in another standard library we use for Flask, which allows most developers to simply set an environment variable in their code to turn on structured log output. We pick all of the structured logs up in Splunk.- Redesigned our custom centralized authentication service to automatically ingest engineer defined YAMLs and then use Spinnaker to deploy ConfigMaps containing authentication opt-out data in Kubernetes which is ingested by our centralized authentication service. Decreased the response time of this service by 50% which speeds up all requests throughout out all of our infrastructure and APIs.
Senior Software Engineer — Infrastructure
Own, maintain, and support our build pipeline. We build Docker containers using Jenkins, and then deploy them to our Kubernetes cluster with Spinnaker.- Rewrote a homespun Go application that every app in our infrastructure (100+) relies on to start up to support multiple regions, and to use AWS Secrets Manager as a backend. This enabled us to easily scale multiple regions and meet compliance requirements for FedRAMP certification.- Completed upgrades to our legacy pre-acquisition Jenkins build system to integrate with Autodesk services. Made changes to network topology in AWS EC2 and VPC to have worker nodes use a NAT so that we could use an Autoscaling Group but still have the network traffic to Autodesk be allowed under the allow-list firewall.- Deployed SonarQube Static Analysis tool into our build (CI) workflow.- Researched and resolved DNS Resolver/Forwarding issues between Plangrid (acquired) and Autodesk- Researched and specced out a plan to upgrade/rewrite our infrasructure as code to Terraform 0.11 which had breaking changes and required a plan to rewrite large swaths of Terraform/HCL2 code which controls production resources.- Planned out and worked on a project to make our observability tools (Datadog, Lightstep, New Relic, LogEntries, Bugsnag) multi-region aware. Made some changes to our code libraries to inject region specific tags to all of the observability clients.
Software Engineer — Infrastructure
Design, Build, and Own the infrastructure running PlanGrid.- Python software development to write either backend services or tools for developer workflows, leveraging the latest technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes. - Worked with a team to build out a distributed multi-region application with push-button region and infrastructure deployment. We leveraged this to roll out a datacenter in Australia in order to win deals that require data sovereignty.- Build and manage production Kubernetes clusters, using either the EKS approach or through bootstrapping it from scratch using Salt.- Use Akamai and Istio Service Mesh to manage most production edge traffic- Building, deploying, and running Terraform modules and layers of Python abstraction ontop of them to enable push-button deployments of our entire infrastructure in new regions- PostgreSQL database reliability engineering through building automated deployments and monitoring. Transitioned databases to use read-replicas to reduce load on write-masters.
Founder
CurrentThe best planner app for big groups. Take your trip out of the group chat and get started now.
Software Engineer — Infrastructure
(Acquired by Autodesk Construction Solutions)Currently working on transitioning to a distributed multi-region application with push-button region and infrastructure deployment.- Write python automation and tooling code to create, provision, manage, and monitor infrastructure- Build and manage production kubernetes clusters, using either the EKS approach or through bootstrapping it from scratch using Salt.- Use Akamai and Istio Service Mesh to manage most production edge traffic- Currently building myriad Terraform modules to enable push-button deployments of our entire infrastructure in new regions- PostgreSQL database reliability engineering through building automated deployments and monitoring. Working on transitioning legacy API requests to use a read-replica.
Site Reliability Engineer
Keeping a mobile app with 20 million RMAU and 5 million API requests per minute running well under rapid growth week over week.- Automation of infrastructure as code pipeline using tools such Atlantis to increase inf-eng team agility.- Kubernetes implementation and administration (KOPS and EKS) using Helm charts.- Istio service mesh implementation and administration- Building internal tools and automation with Python and Go- Chef cookbook authoring and administration to control a large distributed system- Cassandra and MySQL Administration- Running services both on Docker and on a fleet of AWS EC2 instances in autoscaling groups.- Running a CircleCi build pipeline- Intelligent alerting with Prometheus and DataDog.
Devops Consultant
I build fully automated infrastructure as code in AWS using Docker, custom Terraform modules, and Packer. Automating deployment of backend machine-learning infrastructure using Packer, Terraform, and Docker.Kubernetes deployments with kops, GKS and EKS. Helm chart creation and management. Service mesh architecture with istio. Application security and PKI.
Network Engineer (Seasonal Contract)
In support of the National Science Foundation's mandate in Antarctica, I'm working to upgrade the and support the network at McMurdo Station. McMurdo Station is the logistics hub of the continent, and many field camps are deployed and monitored from here. Reliable infrastructure is crucial to our mission and the safety of the community and researchers.Maintenance of a large Campus LAN utilizing Cisco EIGRP routing. Our link off-continent is a WAN connection using the Optus D-1 satellite and back down to Australia over Layer 2 backhaul from there to Denver. We support up to 1000 users sharing an 18 megabit down and 10 megabit up connection. Clever use of Riverbed Steelhead WAN Optimization, traffic shaping, and QoS, and Palo Alto Networks firewall content filtering on the edge of our LAN.Projects include:- Implementation of new Cisco Call Manager VOIP infrastructure for remote sites using EIGRP over a redundant Ubiquity AirFiber.- Implementation of VOIP and upgrades 802.11 mesh network at our distant Williams Airfield, replacing aging PBX and point to multi-point infrastructure with newer Cambium point to multi-point technology to connect a series of 15 buildings together wirelessly.
Senior Devops Engineer
Greenfield rollout of Cloud / AWS micro-services infrastructure, utilization of AWS services:SNS, SQS, EC2, S3, IAM, Lambda, RDS, ASG etc all provisioned using an Infrastructure as Code methodology with Terraform and Packer. During this time I built out a full Terraform environment that leveraged packer to create a Consul cluster, a Nomad cluster, and a Vault cluster alongside some Lambda functions. This built a full microservices environment from scratch in about four minutes.Design and build of AWS infrastructure propping up Go and Node.JS microservices running in Docker using the HashiCorp Stack: Terraform, Consul, Nomad, Vault, and Packer. This was part of a hybrid cloud infrastructure, with us building the cloud side of it in parallel with the existing e-commerce platform which runs in a data center.Implementation and ownership of the Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery pipeline through CircleCI. Monitoring using DataDog and Logz.io. I built a few Terraform modules, including one to have Datadog scale AWS Autoscaling Groups using a mix of SNS, SSM, Consul, and Lambda.I utilized some network chops to build out a strongswan VPN implementation using public IPs on both sides of the tunnel in AWS. Since that is not supported natively in AWS, and our client could not use RFC 1918 (private ips) some complicated network address translation had to occur.
Traveling
I took a year off and backpacked through Africa and South-East Asia.
