Efficiency is everything. This is a statement that has been cemented into my mind since I became an adult. I enjoy finding the little intricacies that improve functionality and the nuances that come from learning the separate pieces of a product that make it whole. Earning my LEAN level 1 certification reinvigorated my passion for tinkering and improving. As a current student at Arizona State University, I am putting together the pieces that will further my understanding of logistics and supply chain management. My attraction to Supply Chain Management and Logistics stemmed from a mentor’s description of improving his company’s supply chain. While seemingly insignificant at the time, his story resonated with me on multiple levels. I’m sure that most people in business have dealt with logistical nightmares. They can cost time, money, and manpower. My experiences occurred in a remote outpost in Afghanistan while serving as a squad leader in the Marine Corps. My logistical responsibilities were to ensure our platoon had the equipment to independently function and the necessities of survival such as food, water, and ammunition. Adversity at a life and death level ingrains the lessons learned much deeper. Questions always linger afterwards. What could have been done differently? What could I have done to improve our situation? One phrase always returns when those questions arise. Efficiency is everything. Adjusting to life outside of the Marine Corps had its speed bumps but working and school helped me concentrate. While employed at The Home Depot, I spent a summer working overnights, unloading lumber and building materials from trucks and ensuring the department was stocked with products. This position gave me firsthand knowledge of the importance of the supply chain from what is shipped to how it is loaded on the truck.
