In the past nine months the organizing committee, representing the Forum's core partners (State Forestry Administration of China, Beijing Municipality, Asia-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation, and IUCN's Commission on Ecosystem Management) designed and convened the 1st World Forum on Ecosystem Governance. The Forum, modeled after the World Economic Forum, comprising a Future Leaders Academy and Roundtable Discussions, explored two broad themes: Governance of Ecosystems to Achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Governance of Ecosystems to Address Climate Change. The 150+ participants from over 50 countries concluded with a Beijing Declaration which conveys the key conclusions of the Forum, a Future Leaders Vision and a Call to Action, which summarizes the individual Roundtable Discussions. Over twenty two years with IUCN I held several positions: Head of Species Programme (1985 -1990), head of Sustainable Use Initiative (1991-2000), Head of Socio-Economics Programme (2001-2002), Head of Ecosystem Management Programme (2002-2003), Coordinator World Conservation Congress (2004-Jan 2007). I retired in at the end of January 2007. the following two years I assisted preparations for the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona, Spain under a contract with IUCN.Over my 22 years with IUCN I worked extensively in Central America, East and Southern Africa, and Central Asia - primarily working with local partners to promote sustainable use of renewable natural resources.I now reside in Baker County, Oregon and devote my time to local environmental issues (Natural Resource Advisory Committee, Watershed Council, and Private Woodlands Association (of which I serve as President).
