The BC Search and Rescue Association (BCSARA) advocates on behalf of the 78 GSAR groups and the over 3,400 hard working professional volunteers, and trained, members-in-training, and resources volunteers who donate hundreds of hours of training in order to search for and rescue hundreds of subjects each and every year.The Mission of BCSARA is: To represent un-paid professional ground search and rescue community by providing advocacy, support for funding and health and safety, access to information as well as public education and prevention.Outdoor education and SAR prevention is offered via the BC AdventureSmart program (I've indirectly managed since 2004 for BCSARA), focusing on reducing the number and severity of SAR incidents in British Columbia. AdventureSmart is a national program dedicated to encouraging Canadians and visitors to Canada to “get informed and go outdoors”. Through education programs, community outreach, special events and media, we help reduce the number and severity of search and rescue incidents in the country. The AdventureSmart program was created by Emergency Management B.C. with the assistance of the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the British Columbia SAR Association. AdventureSmart, B.C, has outreach educators who travel the province delivering outdoor safety presentations to school age children and adults who are interested in outdoor recreation, SAR prevention and personal preparedness. We offer free programs to anyone in the country, to increase their awareness about proper trip planning, training and taking essential gear.As the B.C. Provincial Coordinator, I manage the province's education requests, coordinate outreach staff's schedules, work closely with the 80 SAR groups in the province, assisting 2500+ SAR volunteers with prevention messaging through media streams and face to face training.

The BC Search and Rescue Association created AdventureSmart in 2004. BCSARA continues to support and endorse the program in BC with funding from Emergency Management and Climate Readiness.Based on the first 5 years of AdventureSmart in B.C. the program went national. There is currently AdventureSmart representation in every province and territory based on BC's success. AdventureSmart is a national program dedicated to encouraging Canadians and visitors to Canada to “Get informed and go outdoors”. The AdventureSmart program was created by the British Columbia Provincial Emergency Program with the assistance of the National Search and Rescue Secretariat, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the British Columbia SAR Association. AdventureSmart combines online and on-site awareness with targeted outreach to try and reduce the number and severity of Search and Rescue Incidents.To kick start this initiative intensive event coordination and volunteer management of the BC AdventureSmart outreach teams took place. Recruited, hired, trained and supervised seasonal staff for outdoor education and coordinated all aspects of field staffs work; events, travel, curriculum, gear, media training, communications with partners, evaluations and reporting to the BC Search and Rescue Association and Emergency Management B.C.
