I am performing research under Dr. Steve Thomopoulos – examining bone mineralization in an overall effort to understand tendon-bone attachment. To that end, I am designing a novel nanoscale three-point bending test for hydroxylapatite crystals. A key part of the research entailed collaborating with scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory and learning new processes and techniques to fabricate a system of nanoscale trenches. I drew from my experience in materials science to design and build the trenches and my experience with AFM to develop and perform the three-point bending test. I am currently working with my graduate advisor to publish this technique at an upcoming biomechanics conference and in appropriate journals. -

Through these projects I learned about the collaborative process of biomedical research and have become fluent in the use of AFM as a tool to approach biological questions such as how tissues behave in-vivo and how proteins interact with DNA.
