This spring quarter, I am volunteering at UChicago Medicine within Comer Children's Hospital as part of a pilot program through UChicago's Core Curriculum class, Poetry in Public. "The course focuses on the study of poetry and the body, in the public world, and as a social good. In this quarter, we invite students to take their knowledge and practice of poetry into the world by volunteering to help young patients at the Comer Children's Hospital to write their own poetry, and by working together to understand the experience of poetry" as a factor in health & medicine.

Over the course of 5 weeks, I worked full-time at Dr. Malladi R. Sastry's esteemed pulmonology clinic through his observership program. I worked full time, including overtime on weekends, completing 187 hours of patient care and office work. Through his guidance, I kept an organized handwritten log of over 140 patient interactions, learning about various chronic diseases affecting the lungs specifically among older patient populations, different insurance plans, how to read x-rays and CT scans, how to prescribe medication, and how to use the digital patient log to take dictations. On slower days, he often assigned tasks such as reading autobiographies from older patients of his, textbooks on the history of medicine, and various poetry/philosophy books. Every week, the other interns and I began the day by gathering in his office and presenting our findings from our readings. We learned how to gather our thoughts, break down complex topics concisely, and improve our public speaking skills for our interactions with patients. The benefits of his interdisciplinary approach to medicine showed through the way his longtime patients opened up with him and spoke highly of him. I deeply appreciate his mentorship and support in the summer before I began my journey as a pre-medicine student.

The summer Roe v. Wade was overturned, health disparity and inequal access to menstrual health products was an issue my peers and I rallied around combating. As President of my school's chapter of Key Club International, I co-coordinated and led a city-wide period poverty drive with the VP, collecting over 3,000 menstrual hygiene items for Frisco Family Services and raising awareness in our community along the way.
