Staff Research Scientist
CurrentI lead research in developing advanced materials for 3D printing applications. My work focuses on improving accuracy, durability, and toughness of polymers, leading to significant advancements in material science for Carbon.
Material Scientist
• Part of the team that developed the NIST Standards Reference Instrument (SRI 6005) for an unprecedented simultaneous real-time measurement of rapid polymerization kinetics and polymerization stress for self-cure or photo-cure polymer composites (primarily those used as biomaterials).--- Developed the design requirements of the instrument using beam deflection mechanics such that an accurate and sensitive technique can be developed for the measurement of polymerization stress.--- Used LabVIEW to automate and synchronize the data acquisition from the multiple hardware components of the instrument and developed a simple graphic user-interface (GUI) program for general public usage. • Led the project to successfully demonstrate that the SRI 6005 can be used for evaluating clinically relevant polymerization properties of self-cure polymer composites (bone cements) used in orthopedic applications. • Led the project to determine photocuring variables and techniques which achieve acceptable clinically relevant polymerization properties for restorative dental composites.--- The project developed a guidance of altering the radiant exposure, with the clinically available photocuring unit, for an adequate cure of restorative dental composites.--- The project clarified a long-standing confusion and controversy on the applicability of the pulse-delay photocuring technique for reducing the polymerization stress (detrimental to clinical life) and promoted its potential clinical success for dental restorative composites. • Currently developing metrology to quantify single bacterial cell adhesion to dental materials under clinically relevant oral conditions using AFM-based force spectroscopy.Skills used: Polymer chemistry, Mechanical testing of materials, Mechanics of materials, Atomic force microscopy, Finite element analysis, Spectroscopy, Design for manufacturing and assembly, Data analysis.
Graduate Research Assistant
• Designed, analyzed (theoretical and simulation), and built novel diamagnetically stabilized magnet levitation systems for low frequency (0.1Hz – 10Hz) vibration-based energy harvesting applications. --- Developed a thorough theoretical framework for the statics and dynamics of diamagnetically stabilized magnet levitation systems when subjected to external ambient vibrations such as those on a civil infrastructure. The framework was validated by numerical simulations and experiments. --- Designed and prototyped novel mono-stable nonlinear magnet levitation-based vibration energy harvesters which achieved unprecedentedly high energy conversion efficiencies and low eddy current damping.--- Invented the world’s first bi-stable passive room temperature magnet levitation system. In addition, converted this novel bi-stable magnet levitation system into a low-frequency broadband vibration energy harvester. • Extensive experience in writing proposals (under the guidance of my adviser) to funding agencies, such as, NSF and DOE, for grants related to vibration and thermal energy harvesting. CMMI - 1300684 awarded as a result of the effort.• Mentored high school, undergraduate, graduate students, exchange graduate students (from China, South Korea, and Palestine) in performing research activities at the laboratory.Skills used: Electromechanical systems, Sensors, Magnetics, Electromagnetics, Finite element analysis (ANSYS and COMSOL), LabVIEW, Signal processing, MATLAB, Design for manufacturing and assembly, 3D printing.
Trainee
• Used CAD/CAM software (Tebis and CATIA) to determine tool pathway instructions (CNC machines) for the manufacture of sheet metal dies.• Developed a complete process, planning, and production graphic user interface application (visual basic) for the division. Internal report claimed the application cut the time in decision making by 30%.
