Production Reliability Engineer

Systems Dev Engineer Ii
At AWS, I work on the Glacier Hardware Team, leveraging Python, Go and AWS tooling to ensure the reliability, availability and maintenance of our hardware platform. I work on tooling and process that increase the teams agility, whilst not sacrificing safety.
Site Reliability Engineer
My primary role at Blizzard had me assisting the Battle.net org with our big data platform strategy. This mainly included supporting an existing big data solution designed to ingest data from millions of clients across the globe and support the development of a new service for battle.net on top of kubernetes. In this role, I developed and maintained a solution that gave our Kubernetes platform an out of the box standardization for Logging, Metrics, Secret and Ingress management. I achieved this by developing and maintaining Kubernetes Dynamic Admissions Controllers and even contributing to open source ones. I was able to leverage these technologies to hook into our existing infrastructure and data pipelines for visualizations and operational work. My next project included creating a custom Kubernetes operator to deploy isolated instances of our telemetry stack into Kubernetes. Allowing us to partition out stacks per customers. I also helped maintain a data pipeline that utilized Kafka, Elastic, and Cassandra. Including oncall and operational support.
Operations Engineer
My primary role at STAQ involves automation of a lot of manual processes while increasing the availability of service. I worked on several projects along with my normal duties around on-call and operational support of workloads running on top of kubernetes. My first project at STAQ was the automation of creation of an ETL pipeline tool (NiFi). Using a collection of chef and terraform, I was able to bootstrap a whole cluster and network in 8 minutes through a CICD pipeline (CirlcleCI). I also created a local development tool that allowed developers to build and test nifi flows locally as part of their development workflow using NiFi registry. I lead the automation around bootstrapping an MPP (Greenplum) database reducing the lead time from 8 weeks to 25 minutes. Additionally, the design included a mechanism to allow the database to tolerate and recover from host failure without customer impact.I lead the preparation of a private internal API for public consumption. Developing and implementing an API gateway solution (Kong) on top of the Kubernetes container orchestration platform. I added observability around customer requests (RED metrics), on-boarded API and subsequent services to a modern standardized authentication service (JWT), and automated the build and deployment process around the API (Docker).Additionally, I lead the migration of our database cache layer. This included the design, planning, and debrief afterward. I worked with our Database Admin to ensure the proper cascading invalidation were correct to ensure cache validity. This resulted in a 34% quicker load time on the frontend application due to query caching. Additionally, I created local development tooling to allow for local development on Data Pipelines, introduced automation around building data pipeline stacks, and participated in on-call for data services.
Site Reliability Engineer
My primary role as a site reliability engineer included working under senior engineers to design, architect and maintain highly scalable systems and infrastructure thats supports million of users world wide.My area of focus was two projects, one being a legacy system and one being a green field project . My primary focus with the legacy system was to automate the tooling around its toil operations using orchestration tools such as chef and habitat. Being a Linux based system, I leveraged Chef to configure and automate the Linux environment of our system. This included developing CICD pipelines to test, deploy and maintain chef cookbooks. My primary focus on the green field project was developing tools around Kubernetes and AWS that allowed developers to deploy their micro services to kubernetes cluster in a dynamic safe way. Additionally, we provided out of the box services for kubernetes such as logging, secret management, metrics and security restrictions. In addition to the above mentioned projects, I participated in an on-call rotation for both projects, evangelized devops philosophy in our organization as a whole, and helped set standard in our use of kubernetes.
